I have 2 year old silkie hens (originally had 5 but 3 were cocks), i would like to add some more chickens and create a flock of 4-6. I would like to add red hens (possibly they are orpingtons) - great layer hens from my local farm.

The farm offers any age and even fertilised eggs.

At what age should I add them to my silkies? Should I let my silkies hatch the eggs when they go broody (which they havent yet that ive noticed but spring is approaching) or should I get baby chicks to add directly into the coop or pullets?

Thanks in advance.

I would confirm exactly what breed those red hens are. Orpingtons can be more laid back, but something like a Rhode Island Red could end up beating the snot out of your poor Silkies once they mature. Adding older chickens (even pullets) means you'll need to go through quarantine first (for two weeks) before starting to integrate.

Personally, I'd go with baby chicks. Having one Silkie on their own while the other broods sounds a little lonely.
