2013 Breeding season is officially STARTED for us!

This years babies all currently believe "if mom didn't let you out , you were bad" and then they fuss at the ones who had been locked up when they rejoin them. The only exception is a new comer that has not joined the flock yet. So breaking that belief is also a goal of this breeding season as we let everyone back together after season.

Can I let the Embdens and Dewlaps join each other after those two girls quit laying? I know the Roman should be the last as she laid into May this year.

The ganders take a bit longer to calm down past the final lay. We had final eggs in May, goslings hatched beginning of June and by the end of June I opened gates and let everyone back together, with all gates wide open and 4 pastures to chose from. Then we could rotate and use space for growing goslings over the summer as well.

Congrats on the eggs!

I'll be playing it by ear then this summer.

Thats how I do it Paula. if I can remove a line of sight barrier and not have fence fighting then I open the gates. If they fight through the fence well we have some waiting.

I'm hoping that having a pen of ducks between the one set that can see each other will help, but we are perpared to put up 4ft wood panels if they insist on being onery

You have a great game plan for first year breeding. if you are like us, there will be tweaking from year to year and you will find things that just dont work no matter well they sound in your head. lol A duck pen is a good buffer, make sure they cant get their heads into either goose pen or there could be trouble.

Chicken wire and the fact that they were raised together so the ducks keep their distance will help protect the ducks

I'm hopeing to have the Dewlaps across the street next breeding season.

Will clipping the wings on Scovies keep them in a 4ft fence? I'd love to let ours out in the pasture but the neighbors have dogs and the road borders on 2 sides.

yes if you clip they are grounded until the next molt and re-growth. Its how we keep the girls in place here as the drakes get too big to ever do more than flap hop onto things.
