I love the fibro nakeds. I was thinking to cross in to Silkies to get friendly little fibro scaleless, but I really don't like vaulted skulls and would like that even less on a naked chicken so I've considered spending the money on the LF fibros, hence my interest in Svart Honas.. but I don't fancy getting flayed alive for using such rare birds for a personal project

I wouldn't recommend them to anyone with a harsh winter. Pork is lucky, they're going to be a house chicken! Even in our mild winters I wouldn't leave the coop unheated if they were out there though. They radiate heat, I imagine if they could survive it, the expense in feed to keep that furnace burning would be high, and their extremities would probably be extra prone to frostbite. Those poor little dinosaur hands wing nubbins would be lost in a trice.

Here's some better photos! Pork, Marshmallow, Tugboat, and two without a name. The last egg hasn't pipped so waiting 'til Monday, but I bet the hatch is over.

will you look at them!

@Sally Sunshine why do you feel guilty about selling your Silkies?? And what were the ducks you posted?? They are gorgeous!!!
they were my silky ducks sold them because I had to sell almost all my flock last year. most of my big brahma too. but I kept them best of my brahma so I am working on bringing them back and better, so spring I hope to have my babies back. We kept a few CCL and of course harmonyanns serama. but we sold everything when I couldnt care for them and hubs took over.

I'm back, mostly. I admit to skipping over about 900 posts. I had a super busy couple of weeks, I have a couple of clients who needs halloween props built asap, and one who never confirmed with me that he needed a fake life size severed boars head prop for his lord of the flies play, until he asked 6 DAYS BEFORE THE PLAY if it was ready?!?! crazy, got it done though (first time working with faux-fur!). so now I only need to build a viking axe and shield, and about 30 props for a giant harry potter clue game, but I can handle that.
anyways back to chickens! I candled my eggs and am down to 31 from 54, but my incubator is much happier to have only one layer of eggs in it.
I had a terrible disaster outside though, moved my youngsters to the big coop, they did fine all day- none of my older birds bothered anyone but every one of them is gone now. no idea what would take just the young birds and leave everyone else alone, lots of feathers but no bodies. so now I am panicking that these little still unhatched chicks won't be able to move outside ever :( I will have to set up the game camera and see what is terrorizing the coop at night and how on earth it is getting in the coop.
(sigh) life slows down at some point right? I feel like someone pushed fast forward but I am still in slow-mo lol
boars prop head! how cool is that!!! that sounds so cool to make! I am sick like that just saying!! ha ha ha do you have weasels or snakes? even rats? snakes? that sucks! I want to see pics of the props if you are allowed to share!!!

I candled all 30 eggs last night..and they are all doing well. What in the world..that is a lot of chicks! Thing I worry about though, is that those air sacs are very very small. :/ I didn't hardly have any moisture going on, still don't. Like I said about this new bator, it sure holds the temp and humidity. Will remember this next time. There are some that are perfect size for 11 days..now 12..but will see. I hope those air sacs can still get larger!

you can always try the warm water dunk to help evaporate moisture like duck eggs, it was once a day. but most people do a misting of duck/goose eggs. I never did that because of bacteria, I only did the bleach solution cleaning and dunk ratio and I actually took a temp reading of my water and it had to be a certain degree to dunk them so that the water actually drew out the moisture and didnt draw in the bacteria. but I forget what all those numbers and ratios were, I would have to go back and figure that out, but if your that "off" I could help you out. let me know if you need it.

this is where my meaties chicken necks and kept innard parts ended up after cooking for 2 days....

1st time I made stock its wonderful rich and delish,
I made a bag of flat noodles in a bit of water and just added a quart of stock and they devoured it! they asked for it the following day again!
I dont think it will last until the spring batch is made again!

ohhhhhh I forgot the main thing I wanted to tell you guys!!!!!

I got up this morning and I see a long slit of light at my bator!!!!

THE COOLER wasnt closed right!!! one of the kids must have opened it and didnt close it right last night,

well they had a talk to this morning!!! ANOTHER REASON I LOVE WAFER THERMOSTATS!

TEMP IN THE BATOR 99.5 degrees!!! shwew!!!!

NOW HUMIDITY eeeeekkkkk I know its about that time to worry..... ITS AN issue!

The good thing is, we have no heat on, coal stove hasnt been on all week,

GREAT THING IS, I had that chicken stock on the stove cooking slow for 28 hours straight in the kitchen which is open to the livingroom!

Checking with a flashlight through the window, I have no external pips that I can see and I am not messing to check for internals thats for sure!

SOOOOO now I have no clue what we may have caused in there...............

maybe I dont even get that single roo or two

thats a great idea! some people also use them for boredom busters in the coops in the winter

oh crap! I hope I run into pics as I read on!!!

love it!!!!!  you should be proud!!!

I will take pics later. I will have to fire my laptop up and post them from there. I wish someone would update the iPhone app. I can't even get on the app from my iPad anymore.
