After checking my calendar, and counting to 18 several times. I've deduced that since I loaded my eggs in on the 7th, I count May 8th as my first day. So, today should be my fourth day. That would make May 25th my lockdown?

I should expect chicks on the 26th and 27th of May? You see, this is why I need a hatching buddy. LOL I can't seem to get my days straight. You may have just saved my hatch Natchlaly. Thank you.

Hello, Mrs. Brown.

I'm new at this so I need some coaching too. I set my eggs on the 6th. I was thinking that the 24th was when I needed to not turn them anymore and increase the humidity. Is that correct?

You are correct Kraftyladies. You set your eggs on the 6th, then the 7th would be your first day, according to what I have read here, you count your first day as the next day after you set your eggs. That would make your lockdown the same day as Natchlaly's and one day ahead of mine. Correct me if I'm wrong Natchlaly.

I was kinda panicky this morning. I got up to find that my bator read 98.8.

I think I set the AC a bit too cool in the middle of the night when I got up to relieve myself. I checked the hatch box and it was reading a bit warm at an even 100. I thought if I turned the AC down a bit it might offset the difference. I don't do well when I'm half asleep.

I've decided I'm going to build another incubator today. I like the idea of having another ready to hatch from. I'm kinda worried I won't get the humidity right. I figured I can have at least a couple of weeks to nail this down. LOL I must be nuts.

Hi there! I'm new to this. New to everything from this website and forum down to trying to incubate my first batch of chicken eggs! I'm excited but nervous about incubating. I tried finding silkie eggs to hatch because I love Silkie chickens and was recently given a silkie rooster. But I can't find anyone on craigslist or locally to get eggs from. I even tried looking for hens to get my own eggs from but no luck. I placed 14 eggs of my own chickens (a rooster and mix of Rhode Island Reds and some other black chickens I was given by a friend) and I'm trying these. I see him mate with the hens so I assume their getting fertilized. I candled them and only one seems to have what looks like possibly something happening. I placed them in there last Thursday night. So i should have babies (if any) around the 26th? When should I throw out bad eggs if I candle and can't seem to see anything? Today is day 6. Any suggestions or tips would be amazing. Also you guys get eggs shipped? Where do you buy from? Thank you so much!

There are auctions on here from fellow BYC'ers. on the forum index look and you will see auctions and there is one for hatching eggs. I bet you can find some silkie eggs....so..you know, can hatch more chickens and be addicted like me!

fobpatdgurl18! Glad to have you join our hatch-a-long!

I don't know how useful I can be answering you questions, as I am also new to all of this.

This is my first hatch. I bought my eggs from a nice couple I found on Craigslist only 30 minutes away. They were selling Black Copper Marans eggs.

I've heard good and bad things about shipped eggs. I would agree with Kraftyladies on having the best luck from sellers here on BYC (just my opinion). Check out the auction forum or you can even post a "wanted-to-buy" list of what you're looking for.

As for throwing out bad eggs, well, I'm not for sure. I would be hesitant on pitching anything during the first week unless you're absolutely certain it's not fertile.

Best of luck on your hatching!

Thank you! I'll keep looking on craigslist. Only thing is I'm a college student and money is sorta tight. I don't want to spend alot of money on eggs to try and hatch when I've never done it before ya know? I'm super excited about the one egg I think may be coming along. I really want to see some hatch. Gahhh I never thought I'd say it but I'm a country girl. I love my chickens and ducks! My dad and I recently got two baby Turkeys! So now we have chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, a turtle, fish, two amazon parrots, don't forget the 7 dogs, and 3 lazy cats! Well my mom, dad, and sis have 5 dogs and the other two are my precious babies that I have to share with my boyfriend! I work at a Vet Hospital and one of the doctors have chickens and other livestock. She gave me my silkie rooster. And I bought two silkie chicks but I believe one may be a rooster. Oh well I'll have to give him away or sell him or something. Who knew incubating eggs could be so worrisome and nerve-racking!

Egads! I know what you mean. Sheesh, I've been pacing and gawking at that bator ever since I place eggs in there.

If it's any consolation, I purchased my eggs for $1 each! Yeah, you read that right. Plus, they gave me 11 Golden Lakenvelder eggies! So, all is not lost. I think many would understand your situation and how tight money can be while in college. I have a daughter entering in this fall.

Sounds like you have quite a menagerie there. I can relate to the country setting. I use to have a double-yellow head parrot. I loved that bird, but had to find a good home for it after it bit my wife and drew blood. I didn't think that would be good behavior around my small children at the time.

Working at a vet's office does have it's advantages. Sounds like a fun place to be if you love animals as much as I think you do.
