Ok, I can try this. The whole top is wire but I never thought about it needing to pass through. I was more worried about keeping heat in around all 4 edges

FYI, chicks that are still in down are a lot like snakes and lizards. They do not regulate body heat as we do. They absorb heat and they shed excess heat as needed as lizards do. Therefore, they need a cooling off zone as well as a hot zone to regulate body heat.

An enclosed brooder acts like an oven and will cook chicks that are unable to shed excess body heat.
