3 eggs in one day?

I have Hy-lines, which is a commercial laying cross. The 5 of them lay 5 eggs a day. Sometimes double yolkers. And sometimes, albeit rarely, they lay two eggs. The second is usually VERY thin shelled. They all lay in the early morning every day. So rare, but not impossible.

I don't know. I didn't think they could lay more than 2 a day and that's pretty rare. I have a Leghorn hen that has laid two eggs in the same day on two different occasions now. I know this because she is the only one that is free-ranging right now, (because she flies out of the fenced-in area where the other hens are and stays out of it) She has a special little place where she lays her eggs and she lays an egg every single day. Once she missed a day, and the next day there were two eggs in her little nesting spot. A couple days ago I found two eggs again but she had laid previous day. She is just a laying machine. I have been hoping for double yolks from her but haven't gotten any yet.

did you actually just say that each of your hens lays 5 eggs a day? Or did you mean that you get an egg a day from each of them?

Most of these ideas make sense. The first one can't apply here since she's the only Ameraucana (the other 2 are RIRs) and all 3 eggs were blueish-green. I did look up the symptoms of egg-binding, and that seems plausible, but she didn't really show those signs, either... but I will be watching her more closely for a while. For number 3... I do hope this isn't something wrong inside her "egg-timer" (yes, I know that wasn't really funny). I started a chart to see which days she lays and how the egg looks (actually it's a piece of paper on the front of the fridge). 4... I do go in each day and turn the straw with a rake so I think this wouldn't be it, simply because I am pretty sure I'd break a few, but that will certainly be something I'll be more careful about when I head into the coop.

Thank you for all the ideas. I'll certainly be keeping a closer eye on her for a while.

Not so. There are numerous posts on here of that and they cannot all be wrong since some only have a very few chickens and know their eggs by sight ans size. They can do a twofer when they are young. Now a threefer I have never heard of .

If they truly are laying multiple eggs a day something is wrong with them. There's good odds those hens won't have long lives or some of their chicks won't. I wouldn't hatch from a hen that laid more than the extra egg once or twice in it's life. Not actually good genetics to play with unless you want to create another line of chickens with problems.

I have a silkie that will hold at least two eggs in if she dosen't get to lay them in her favorite spot (my husbands closet).

We went out of town once and she didn't have access to 'her' spot... when we got home she ran into the closet and 20 minutes later there were 2 eggs!

She has done this on more than one occasion. She has perfectly good nest boxes outside in her coop... but somedays she just prefers my husbands closet.

Go figure... I don't put anything much past silly chickens anymore!

Oh, I'm not breeding them! I have enough to deal with... No, they are only for eggs.

So far yesterday and today Yvaine has only laid 1 egg per day so I'm hoping things are cleared up for the time being.
