3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

LOL no worries. You are like me.. I am up at 345 or 4 every morning like a crazy person. And it's not like I'll win it - last year I think three chicks came out before midnight and the rest waited until like 8AM. Or later, can't remember. But I wasn't even close to first.

Sane people don't get up that early? Hm... never thought that would be the reason I was not sane.

And sorry, I'm grumpy. I've been lacking sleep this past week, then fall into a wonderful deep sleep after I let them out at 6. Then the phone rings. Then I try to go back to bed, and I'm up. And mad. And then I start thinking about where my eggs are... yeah, tracking says this batch is in Scarborough now. Probably Bangor later today, repeat of last time. ARGH! So I'm a tad touchy this morning.

Still have to clean the coop out before the big snow starts because after that it won't get cleaned until Spring... that's on my agenda for today. Guess I'd better go do that now. That's the only con I can think of to having a gigantic coop.

I just adopted out a russian tortoise hatchling to a teacher for her classroom and she lives in Maine! I like having the weather updates

We just had a rare hard freeze! It took all my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants down and my house is a potted jungle

Wow that's cold

I don't think I could take it that cold! We only hit 20 like once every 10 years or so and only for a few night time hours! But we did have about 60 days of 105 with a few days above 110 this summer. It was pretty brutal on top of the severe draught we had going! Has any body ever heard the old dust bowl day folklore of Lucky Rain Chickens? When I was younger I remember reading about the Dust Bowl Era and Snake Oil Salesmen selling Lucky Rain Chickens well since I started hatching chicklets this year every time I have a batch of eggs about to hatch we have gotten rain

A few more hatches and this severe draught should be gone

I got a mixed batch from her last spring, mostly marans, but I did get a couple Amer. I really liked the Golden Cuckoo so I wanted to get a couple more. My DW really liked the Lemon Cuckoo and was happy that she had some extra to send to us.

I know it's hotter than hades here for six months, but I could NEVER go back to living where it regularly goes below freezing.

8 years ago, I bought land in Utah to retire to... NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

YAY all my eggs are here. Lots of nice green blue eggs - supposedly some real araucanas in there, but that remains to be seen. Can you see 'tufts' at hatch if so or do I have to wait and see if any of those hatch?

All are sitting waiting to be set!

No kids for me, either, and I'm plenty busy so the coop gets cleaned when it starts to smell - probably every 3rd month or so... depending on how often they're in it, much less in summer. It started to smell 2 weeks ago but I wasn't able to clean it until today. Just got done. Smells so nice and piney and the shavings are a light tan color, not brown!

Melissa, Scarboroughs probably 2 hours south of here, it's in the southern part of Maine. Usually this time of year I'm lamenting my choice to live here, but it's actually "warm" out at almost 40. I was out cleaning the coop in a t-shirt. We'll be subzero shortly though, I'm sure of it. I don't think the cold is the worst part about living this far north, it's the dark. I know we don't have it as bad as the folks north of me, but I'm not used to it. Right now it doesn't start to get light until 6:30 AM and it's dark at 4. I only see my birds off the roost on weekends! Summer is crazy, too - it starts getting light around 3:30 AM and gets dark around 9.

Strange as it is, it's home now. I've been here almost 6 years. That's hard to believe.

I called the Post Office this morning to see if they could call me if they saw my package. The regular witch wasn't there but the her understudy was. I was told that there were over 200 packages there to sort (really? In backwoods, rural Maine?) and she can't possibly look at every single one (how else would you sort them?). Tracking still says they're in Scarborough but yesterdays eggs tracking still said it was in Bangor until about 6 PM and Chris had picked it up at 11:30 here.

Expected Delivery By: December 9, 2011 .... right.
