I've got a 4 year old hen that is suddenly acting very strange. On friday night, I found her laying in the run, and while she usually comes running when she sees me, this time she barely moved. She tries to stand up but seems to have a hard time getting her legs underneath her. When she does manage to stand, she takes a few limping steps then lays down again. More often than not, she tries to get her legs underneath, but ends up flopping to her side and using her wing to catch herself before settling down again, or kind of crab walking backward.
She is still eating and drinking really well and seems bright and alert. I have checked her crop, and she seems fine. I have checked her vent, and all clean there. I have felt her legs and checked her for cuts or abrasions, but again . . . nothing. I have just discovered that she has mites, so that might be the problem, but would that cause the problems standing/walking?
Right now I have her isolated in an area by herself with food and vitamin water. I have also been giving her poly-visol. Really don't think it's Merek's because there are no other symptoms.
Any opinions? I am thinking that she may have injured herself, because my mom said that she saw her "trip" when she came running out of the coop on Thursday.
