How did you confirm that? A lot of people assume sudden death is a heart attack. I don't mean ugliness, I am here to learn.

Pneumonia would suggest you have something MORE going on in your flock. Where did you get those birds from and how long have you had them?

Have you checked to see how much necropsy would be performed by your state instead of yourself or your vet? It is often low or non cost for back yarders as a means of protecting our food supply chain. Looks like there are two possibilities in Wisconsin..

And just in case you are able to pursue that route, a link to help achieve it...

In order to avoid disease... for "breeders" I MIGHT order a BUNCH of chicks from the hatchery and keep only the best of the best. The rest (yes even bantams) can be eaten (not by your parents) or sold. Even good breeders don't put out 100% good quality stock.

Good luck rebuilding. Hope it gets smoother sailing for you! :fl
They only deal with wildlife. Any other suggestions?
We want to send her in for a necropsy but need a place to send her.

ETA: I know what he died of because I did his necropsy myself.
A veterinary person on BYC confirmed the presence of Pneumonia.
You can look at my threads to find the necropsy thread

My dad is looking at it right now.
They take chickens, but we can only find the biopsy and avian influenza options.

Sometimes web sites are confusing or not laid out well. You can try calling them.

Good for you, for trying! Again sorry for your loss, not knowing seems like it makes it harder for me. :hugs

And that doesn't even include microplasma and toxicology.
:th

Parents are vegetarian.
So is DD1, she won't eat anything that has even a minuscle amount of animal body part in it. But that doesn't mean she gets bent out of shape if I do a necropsy to see why a chicken died. Not that she would want to participate in any way.

Of course I'm not saying you can change your parents' minds about it.

Send the bird to @ronott1, he works at UC Davis and can hand carry it to the lab. Isn't it nice of me to volunteer his services?? ;)

A lot of people assume sudden death is a heart attack.
I've had 3 sudden deaths. Didn't do anything about the first, the other two were both fatty liver disease confirmed by necropsy. I had one that likely died after having a couple of strokes. No reason to do a necropsy there.

Do you know someone who could do a necropsy for you? At least to check for intestinal worms, if nothing else. Or someone who would allow you to do a necropsy at their home, if that wouldn't offend your parents. Good luck finding answers and I am so sorry you are having to go through this.

I might. I am still looking into professional necropsy options.
Thing is, we need the testing part of the necropsy because we are concerned with disease.
