4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

So I am wondering... it was posted here that we could still set eggs on Friday and be included in the contests (but not the first hatched one) is that right? I thought that had been said because of so many of us are still waiting on eggs due to slower than normal shipping times. So I am waiting to take my pic and post it until my last set of eggs arrive tomorrow. However, the guess the number of eggs set contest ends tonight? How is that going to work??

It's a guess. You really shouldn't be allowed to guess how many eggs are going to be set AFTER everyone has set and posted how many they've set. It makes it more fair to guess before everybody's eggs are set. :)

If we set eggs a little bit early, can they still be counted in the hatch along (but not the first chick out)? Because I want to get my quail eggs in ASAP when they arrive, so I'll be setting them close to 11pm tonight, instead of 12 noon tomorrow. They'll hatch New year's eve into NYD.

I agree allowing people to guess after numbers were posted wasn't fair. I refuse to give my total number set in writing until tomorrow (Friday)

I put my guess in when they first opened it up. It's a guess, so I don't mind if others have a bit of an advantage over me. I wouldn't sit down and count all of the eggs anyways, so it wouldn't make any difference to me if I guessed before or after ALL of the numbers were in, lol. I'm just lazy like that, lol.

I did a little research on the vaseline a while back. From what I understand it's a tempory fix for the begining stages of frostbite. Putting vaseline won't be an all winter fix but if it's really cold one day and you notice spots, you should give it a try. One of my roosters had about 7 teeth in his comb, he lost all of them to frostbite except the very middle one. It kind reminds of the middle finger, hahaha.

It's probably a DC tag. They haven't been updating them like they do the rest of the year, unfortunately. And everything is coming really late. My eggs were sent Sat and the last update was the 10th, but I checked this morning and they finally made it to my PO. 5 days in the mail, instead of the typical 2. I just hope that everybody gets their packages and eggs in a safe and timely manner and still get great hatch rates!

You can call the PO and ask them to search for a missing package that has a DC number. I had a package of eggs go missing; it was shipped Dec. 3rd, and hit the sort facility and was never heard from again.

I called on Saturday and they were very nice, and said that they would put a trace on it, esp. since it was three days overdue at that point. On Monday my local office called and said that it couldn't be found and to assume that it was lost or stolen. They offered to write a letter to the seller and confirm that it was lost and recommended I ask for a replacement shipment. Ebay seller agreed, yeah! They wouldn't make it in time for the NYDH, but I'd still get the eggs. Then, miraculously on Tuesday evening at 5pm it turned up, so I set them!

Contacted the seller again, and let her know they arrived. She agreed that I should report back if they don't hatch and she would send another batch. Can't ask for more than that

I have to admit I was tempted too, that's one heck of a prize and there are a lot of set numbers out there to give you a good idea. Then I saw how many I would have to add up and starting thinking that it really wouldn't be fair, so I stuck with my original guess. Everyone knows that there will be a few people who will take the time to count them up, but many of us aren't posting until tomorrow anyways including me so it's not like they are getting the actual number.

Go ahead and add them.
Great, checked tracking and the should be arriving today, so my little incubator won't be so empty.

On a sad note. We lost one of our chickens this morning. It was my four year old's pullet.

Sorry about your chicken. And sorry it was the kids, that makes it much harder.
Worrying about a temp spike in the bator?

Here is NEXT WEEK'S "Mayan" WEATHER FORECAST...

I don't even know how many will be set in my own incubator really for the hatch, lol.
