4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Well last night/this morning my turkey eggs began their journey in the incubator. I thought it would be symbolic to put them in at midnight and hope for a first hatch of the new year :)

I'm thinking of adding some eggs from my chickens in 7 days to make a full incubator (yeah right I'm getting like 1 egg a day) but will try to put a few in to see what pops out. I put some solar lights around the window of the chicken hutch and hoping that will encourage them to start laying a little more....

I would maybe prefer that method too if I could actually find that jugular! I don't know how many roosters' faces got cut up because I couldn't locate the blasted thing. The hatchet is much faster and they do bleed out pretty well. Then salt water brings out any blood that didn't get pumped.
The first time i tried it i missed too.. lol practice makes perfect

It's almost 12:30 PM here...I set 20 duck eggs a second ago. I was browsing around BYC and happened to look down at the time and I was like OMGoodness it's almost 20 minutes past time to set the duck eggs! Ah! Anyway, they are warming up in one of the Sportsmans now. : )

All the ducklings will probably be mixed, but I'm sure they'll still be adorable, yes? ; ) What is everyone else setting?
Oh, and question....I was going to do two sets of chicken eggs. I have several dozen collected as of today, the oldest is 5 days old today. Should I go ahead and set those now, or should I keep collecting eggs until next Tuesday (11th)? Thoughts? : )

Do you have two incubators?

Just thinking it would be easier if your going to have offset hatch days to have a lock down incubator.

I personally am adding in my chicken eggs on the 11th so I have the same hatching date.

Goodluck!

Since they are your own eggs there shouldn't be any problem with holding them for up to 2 weeks before setting. Some people even hold them longer than that with no problems.

Hi everyone!

I've been hoping to be able to participate and was finally able to get some eggs to set, so I'm in. I can't wait to get started!

Personally, I would wait until the 11th. Then they will all have the same hatch date. The oldest would be 12 days on the 11th, I don't consider eggs bad until 14 days. The 12 day old eggs may have slightly decreased hatchability, but it shouldn't be noticeable. Good Luck with what ever you decide!

Hi ya'll,

I signed up for BYC just a couple weeks ago, partly b/c the Fodder Thread got me to finally actually *do it* (I just uploaded picks over there of the 1st batch)
but also b/c the the entire concept of a Hatch A Long for NYD was just too good to miss out on !!!
oh, & even w/ contests & prizes , wow how clever (thanks to the ppl running that part and those giving prizes).

So, my hubby is working on finishing up my DIY 'Bator this week :)
& I pick up 24 hatching eggs Sat (found someone w/ hens a laying only 25 miles from me via BYC, how cool is THAT!! since my girls have been on egg vacation since Sept.

I'll post pics of 'bator & eggs when I have them.

Just wanted to say hello and thanks for the great fun way to count down the end of 2012 and (hopefully) start off 2013 w/ something new and fun!

You were supposed to set at NOON not midnight. Don't add you chicken eggs until the 11th at noon.

Well I'm glad you joined the fun. Did you sign up for the hatch? I have quite a bit of BYC folks around me and it is wonderful. I have gone to and had set ups with a couple of them at our local swap meet. Lot's of fun.

Did you guys know that if you type in your chicken breed in Google, some of your pictures can be in the spot where they show pictures. I was looking up Columbian d'Uccles and was looking at the pictures and saw my Marans/d'Uccle mixes on there, I was shocked because I don't know how they got there. Also I just found out, you can copy a picture of someone, and do a search on Google image and see if they are who they say they are. Call me crazy, but the internet knows all.
