4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Here is my random posting. I sure hope i win some of the wonderful hatching eggs that are being offered as a prize. while this is my first time entering a contest like this, it is a lot of fun. Confusing, but fun ! It sure does take a lot longer than i thought to go through all the contest pages and trying to keep up with all the posts, forget about it !! thanks to all those who put this together, i bet it was a lot of work ! can't wait to see what everyones hatch looks like on nyd.

I just realized the incubator was turned off for the past 4 hours. I was cleaning out the largest of my aquariums to move in some new koi and while I was draining it, I turned off all of the power strips to stop the filters. I hadn't realized that my incubator was one of those plugs... Now I'm super nervous to candle tonight later tonight. What do you think their chances are? I can't believe this happened...

Only four hours off? I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks. I knew embryos can survive longs periods of time when they are further along in incubation, I just wasn't sure since they are only half way developed. Guess I'll finds out later tonight, but that gives me hope. Thanks again.

I once had a 18 day old embryo survive 3 days on the kitchen table, and no, I'm not kidding. I found an egg in the middle of the coop somewhat near a broody hen, but figured that someone was just being silly when they layed it and brought it in. I was lazy and left those eggs on the table for 3 days and 2 nights before finally doing something about them. I was a little worried about that one egg and I figured if there was something inside, then it's dead by now. So I go outside and open it and blood trickles out, I panicked but I knew with the crack I made, it wouldn't survive so I opened it the rest of the way. The little guy turned his head and looked at me, he even tried to chirp by opening is beak serveral times. I felt horrible as the poor little creature passed away in my hands.

By the way, this happened 4 years ago and now I realize that I should have candled that egg before opening it.

NYD Hatch-a-long Digest for 12/22/12
Statistics: Contest5 was the #1 busiest thread, The main thread was #2
Sally Sunshine missed the #1 most posts! Blarneyeggs had ten more for the#1 spot.

Along with more eggs being pulled from the bator, some had incubator emergencies. Some were accidental while others had to do with power outages. Short times of low temps will only delay the hatch!

Razadia can't find her place on the zoning map. She can't find a map either. They are not going to worry about the new chicken laws. I wouldn't either.

Awwwhww. I'm sorry!

My grandparents used to buy eggs from a woman who had quite a lot of chickens an free ranges them. I guess they would lay their eggs outside any where they please and she would go pick them up (wonder if she had nesting boxes for them?!). Anyway, one day my grandpa was making omelettes and cracked up an egg to dump a fairly well developed embryo into the skillet. They don't buy eggs from her anymore !
