4th Annual BYC NYD Hatch-a-long

Well, my externally pipped chick pipped over 24 hours ago, now I'm wondering if I should try helping. It's the one that's pipped at the pointy end of the egg. It is still moving in there... what do you all think?

I will try to answer more tonight and not be skimpy with you!

Waiting was the correct thing to do. The chick has the big part of the body stuck in the small end of the egg and they usually will not be able to zip. It will keep straining to get out and will get weaker and weaker. It will also have a tendency to develop leg problems so after you get it out watch for splayed leg and such.

You will need to watch the chick to make sure it is not getting too weak. Also important is not messing up the other hatching chicks. If there are pipped eggs in the bator you might want to wait until they hatch. If you do decide to help the chick, wet a paper towel and drop it into the bator when you take the chick out.

There could be problems with the chick that caused it to pip the wrong end, so this one will be iffy from that and the added stress of trying to get out.

I hope I was more helpful today.

Edited to add: If the chick makes it, watch for pasty butt! Stress causes this.

Do you know what sorta mutt hopped the fence? I'm sad b/c I lost a dog last fall , wk b/f my bday, Pry x PittBull , Crosby was great, we rescued him at 8 wks -ish, he looked like a Pitt Bull but was the size of a smallish Pry !! : ( miss him...
Too bad the house sitter will not be into welping pups! My sister once helped whelp some Malamutes, got pick of the litter and she was SO bonded w/ that dog it was amazing. Maybe you can find someone who is more into it to be backup for the sitter and on-call for whelping midwife duties?
