Hi all, I’m obsessed with this baby that ended up hatching alongside some Mille Fleur D’Uccle eggs I purchased. Breeder thinks he or she is 2/3 Cochin & 1/3 silkie. Dad is pure Cochin & mom is 1/2 Cochin, 1/2 Silkie.

Confirm my suspicions… rooster? No wattles yet… 🫠🙃

At age 5 weeks, with a comb that big and bright, yes you are correct. That chick is a cockerel (will be a rooster when he grows up.)

No wattles yet…
That is because of his beard. The beard causes the chicken to have smaller wattles or no wattles, and also hides any amount of wattles he may have.

Breeder thinks he or she is 2/3 Cochin & 1/3 silkie. Dad is pure Cochin & mom is 1/2 Cochin, 1/2 Silkie.

That would make the chick 3/4 Cochin, 1/4 Silkie. (The Silkie is only half of one parent, so 1/4, with all the rest being Cochin.)

Cockerel for sure, not a rooster. Also, all chickens have wattles, even if they are the slightest wattles ever. Muffed and bearded breeds usually develop very small wattles because of their muffs and beard blocking the view. All chickens also have a comb.
