Yep, grain mites....don't think they bite tho.Is there such a thing as a feed mite?
grain mitesFunny thing just happened. I think I know what the parasites were on my chick. I mentioned about the feed having some pieces of mold. I went to pick them out to put in a bag (to show the store clerk since I had planned to return for a refund) and had a hard time finding them. I had gathered some in a cup and left it in the bag and they were dessimated by what I guess are weevils. They looked like ants but with different bodies. It was really powdery in the bag and I started to itch. Like I felt things crawling on me. It was the exact same feeling I had before when I brought him home. That is the same brand feed she used on him. Thankfully I never did use it. I sacked it up and am throwing it away. It's not worth $15 to have my house infested and my vehicle infested in order to return it. What could it be?! Is there such a thing as a feed mite? Or an invisible weevil mite? Their usual feed bag was sitting right beside it. They've been side by side for two days. Now I'm scared I'm going to infest everything and their feed is very expensive at 28 a bag. I am just sick over this.
Never seen those in feed...got 'em in the kitchen this year tho.grain moths are common too
I have opened up a bag of feed and they fly out... I think they are the same as the pantry moths.Never seen those in feed...got 'em in the kitchen this year tho.
Maybe not the same thing, call 'em pantry or miller moths.
The purina product I had problems with a few years ago (as outlined in the thread linked above) started putting DE in the feed, no more grain mites, then they stopped the DE and mites were back again this summer, so I just added it myself. Store staff wiped the bag with a strong pyrethrin product before I left the store, mites were all over that unopened bag by the next day. Crazy, but small potatoes in the chicken pest arena.Different feed mill said they put de in the feed
It's also added as pest control in stored grains.DE is approved as a feed additive at a rate of up to 2%... for use as an anti caking agent. I'm unsure what rate of application provides for pest control.
I know that has been claimed... do you know at what rate is is considered effective? It's also added as pest control in stored grains.
I actually think it has more to do with pests than caking(moisture absorption).I know that has been claimed... do you know at what rate is is considered effective?
