So very sorry for your loss. I, too, would lean toward something in the weasel family - they are definitely known for their musky smell and their wanton destruction. Hope you find out what it is and get it taken care of before you get your new ones. Good luck.

I looked up a fisher cat and it definitely resembles what I saw last year...

How do get rid of it--if it will attack me and my dogs--which are a chocolate lab and pit bull?

Dang, you folks have some wicked looking predators back there. And I was afeared of my lil ol scorpions and rattlers.

well speaking from much experience you have some type of predator in the varmint kind probably a skunk a racoon a possum etc. if i had to make a guess id saya coon because they will kill and leave leftovers so that they can coem back. my suggestion is to leave a carcass out and poison it with strychnine (gopher poison) or to go to tractor supply or some other similair store and get a trap and bait it. no doubt whatever did it will come back if there is something to come back to. otherwise he or she will go on and just come back later when there is something worth eating and youll beback at square 1. ihave had this happen too many times and you need to nip it in the bud. hate to be so fatalistic sounding but its trrue

Sorry for your loss.

I do alot of hunting if you check my website link out. Couple of thoughts:

Don't put out any poison unless you are 110% sure nothing but what you want to eat it will eat it.

If its a fisher your pit will have no problem holding his own against it, may get a little scared up. A fisher will flat catch a squirrel running through the tree tops, very fast and carry a mouthful of pain.

Fox will also do the damage you have. The hole in netting looks high up to be a fox but grey fox can and will climb trees. Not to any great height, but can climb.

A coyote would have made a bigger mess of the netting then that, so would dogs in my opinion.

A feral cat is also possible.

An owl I doubt also if there is just one hole in netting.

A weasel or mink is possible also, but I have my doubts due to size and location of hole in netting.

Lay some boards down with flour on them or make some mud holes where you can get some tracks to identify the culprit.

I used to work on a phasent farm with thousands of birds. The only animal to kill like that is Mink or weasle they would just kill and suck some blood from the head and move on to the next bird. Now as for the really eaten birds thats likle coon or bigger. thay might have smelled the kill and got some ez pickens after the mink was gone. " Wild " You need some sensored lights. so sorry .I lock up my birds every night...

I have been at it all day and I am exhausted. I don't know what to do and I know this whatever will be back, At this point I have a responsibility to protect my remaining birds as they are, excuse the pun, sitting ducks. I have locked up as many as I can and will be waiting...

On another topic--some of them dressed out really nicely--especially for heritage breeds. I was especially surprised by the Salmon Faverolle carcasses. Their keel was not as sharp as I would have expected and they have a nice coloring. On the other hand--birds with dark pin feathers did not leave a great carcass. As I was not processing for people--these were certainly not my cleanest birds with regards to feathers--but all things considered--I was pleasantly surprised.

Thank you for all of your ideas BYC and wish me well...

Had our series of coon attacks and from the picks it looks like you had more than on.
Set a or more leg traps and shoot them when trapped without mercy when caught.
We keep leg traps baited (in different ways) and moved over our areas and then dispatch any predator when caught.
They show no mercy and neither will I...
