5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I just looked at the genesis 1588 on amazon and different things came up.... also I saw these and wondered how well they worked:

~Circulated Air Turbo Fan Hova Bator Incubator http://www.strombergschickens.com/p...an-Hova-Bator-Incubator-2362/basic-incubators
~Mini Advance Incubator http://www.strombergschickens.com/product/Mini-Advance-Incubator/advanced-incubators

I also looked at the genesis.. http://www.amazon.com/GQF-1588-Gene...8&qid=1386205944&sr=8-1&keywords=Genesis+1588 only one left in stock!!!! what do I do?!?!?!?!

The best one is the Brinsea but it holds a small amount of eggs. The GQF Genesis is Digital and better than the 2362. It is the old style and does not have controls, humidity and temperature on the top.

I would get the Genesis, a Brinsea Spot check and a Humidity tester from incubator warehouse. I have had a lot of great hatches with that set up.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that.

Ya really.
sounds like a cute surprise in store there!!

Well I need a good site to get a good thermometer from. When should I get my incubator set up and going? How many of the spaces under the turning rack should I fill with water? It is a still air incubator. I think if this goes ok and I get atleast ONE chick I am going to buy a different incubator and become addicted like the rest of you. I guess I have the time for all of this now, they dismissed me from nursing school today for being at a facility that I was not assigned to in full uniform, I had no clue that was a rule. Guess I have more time for chickens.

That is harsh! Is there an appeal process? Are they trying to protect against students impersonating trained personnel? Anyway, hope it just opens the way for bigger and better for your future.

Ugh. Me and this incubator are gonna go round and round, I can tell ;)

I should not be so nerve wracked BEFORE the hatching even starts!

I am really having trouble keeping this LG on point...it's a still air. I'm going to do a dry incubation. Any additional pointers on how to keep the temp steady? It's in the innermost room of my house, which stays at a pretty constant temp. No windows, no drafts.
The LG I have pretty much won't stay steady w/o the mass of the eggs in there, you can try to calibrate using ziplocks or jars of water in there to make it closer to what it will be with eggs, not perfect but better than empty. Also, there is a thread on here (sorry I don't have a link) w/ lots of LG pointers, mainly to afix a milk bottle cap to the temp ajustment nob so you can move it about a fraction of a molicule to make the adjustment, literally sometimes just touching it moves it enough, & you have to wait a few hrs between to see the result. One thing I finally realized was that if it was a little low then if I waited until the heating cycle just cycled off then I could touch the controll rod nob just enough to make the heat cycle back on, JUST that tiny tiny fraction until the light pops back on, and that would up the temp setting the smallest poss. amt. , then wait through a few cycles to see how it does. I also , as others have told you, found that 102F at the top of the eggs w/ still air LG was CRITICAL as in the diff. between 0% hatches I had & several 100% hatches I had. Of course everyone's home heat, elevation, eggs etc are different, so what works for some does not for others, that is the other huge thing, what you finds actually works may work only at your current location. Good luck! It is sooo worth it when they hatch :)

They hatch late with the new style because a bunch of the Geneses's did not keep the incubator at the correct temp. The old style has rocker buttons to adjust it and it is set at the factory at the correct temperature.

Use the spot check to make sure the temperature is correct and follow the instructions for adjusting.

With the old style, I would incubate the fist batch and adjust based on hatch results. I will help you with that. I have done this quite a bit before.
