5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Well I need a good site to get a good thermometer from. When should I get my incubator set up and going? How many of the spaces under the turning rack should I fill with water? It is a still air incubator. I think if this goes ok and I get atleast ONE chick I am going to buy a different incubator and become addicted like the rest of you. I guess I have the time for all of this now, they dismissed me from nursing school today for being at a facility that I was not assigned to in full uniform, I had no clue that was a rule. Guess I have more time for chickens.
Oh good grief, I am so sorry! I mean, having more time for chickens is always a good thing, but wow, so harsh to be dismissed! You've had a year, haven't you? Come on, 2014!

this year is my first year ever having chickens and this is my first time trying to hatch eggs so wish me luck and any help is more then welcome

Ugh. Me and this incubator are gonna go round and round, I can tell ;)

I should not be so nerve wracked BEFORE the hatching even starts!

I am really having trouble keeping this LG on point...it's a still air. I'm going to do a dry incubation. Any additional pointers on how to keep the temp steady? It's in the innermost room of my house, which stays at a pretty constant temp. No windows, no drafts.

One thing that sometimes helps is putting the bottom half back into its half of the box it came in, sort of as an insulating layer.

Good luck! Truthfully, even if you don't get a good hatch - or any hatch - following along here will help you a lot with the next one ... and trust me, there is always a next one :)

We should know about that one, and what happened ;)

Well the main thing was the people who started the contest organizing all got sick. So no one had the original info. But there were just too many.

I put in 4 duck eggs from the local feed store today
400

I got my first muscovies egg today! And not ONE broody hen to sit on it. How did that happen to me????

ok great thanks!! I hope we can do the hatch...we are looking up bators and still considering if we will....

Feed stores often sell still air incubators. That is a good way to start and often work well with locally collected eggs.
