6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

The evaporation of the water sprayed on the egg cools it and helps it dry out--it will make the air cell grow faster. It is not the same as humidity--It does not add humidity.

No, I was worrying about it raising the humidity if sprayed too much and it stayed on whatever else is in the bator, side of bator....I think he has chicken eggs in there too.

Yes, it says in the posts on that site that misting the eggs makes them dry out "It is counter intuitive" It is the effect of evaporation. The same thing as when one sweats and it evaporates off of your skin there is a cooling effect and a lowering of humidity where the evaporation happens.

Water is weird in that its different states, liquid, vapor, solid; do different things.

added: it is a very good thing to mist duck eggs.

Hi incubaties, I have my first of 2 batches ready to go into lockdown tomorrow...4 shipped lav orp eggs ( out of 12, 4 broken on arrival etc) all have weird oval shape air cells going from one side of the egg to the other. Any suggestions on how to handle this? And also my 2nd batch...the air cells don't seem to be getting bigger....14 days in

There are things you can do for detached air cells. Check the hatching 101 article--It is in the first post of this thread.

Eggs like that need to be incubated and hatched big end up. The oddly shaped air cell will cause the chick to pip into the liquid or a vein instead of the air cell. Mark the air cell at lockdown and if the chick does not pip in the area where the air cell is marked it may need help.
