6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Well, more trouble with my "NYD" hatch. My broody's chicks are due today or tomorrow. They were initially set to hatch NYD but the eggs weren't fertile. I set some new eggs which were due to hatch today or tomorrow. Today, my broody hen was off the nest and seems completely not broody. There are two new eggs in her nest so I presume she sat too long, gave up, and has started laying again. Now I'm waiting for the incubator to get up to temperature to see if I can still get a couple of these eggs to hatch...

valleychicks, sorry about you losing your dog. Was it to old age? We are starting to worry about our boy because he is getting up there in age.

She was 14 and had lost some of her site to cataracts . My parents live on a canal off of a large lake in a gated community in Mississippi. We were visiting them for Thanksgiving. During the night of Thanksgiving 2013, Shay went out the doggie door for a potty break and must have went toward the water in the canal instead of coming back toward the house. She was one to stay away from the canal so I know it was an accident and she just got confused. It was very heart breaking.

Do you have another hen/hens that could have put the other eggs in the nest? It usually takes 5 days for my hens to get over being broody before they start to lay again.

I do have one other hen that's with her... but I've had them both for almost a year and the second hen has never laid an egg since I've had her. I suspect she is significantly older than I was told when I got her. It's also worth mentioning that the last time this hen went broody, she continued to lay eggs for several days to a week after she went fully broody and glued herself to the nest 24/7. I'm 100% certain that those eggs were laid by the broody because they all hatched with 5 toes just like mom. 4 eggs in the incubator now. We'll see what happens. I couldn't see much of anything when I candled them.

Any idea why one membrane would look so dry and the rest are perfectly white? It has definitely not been pipped longer either.

It's not that I'm worried for baby at this point.. Just think it's weird.

Oh ok. So she's a Silkie. Yeah I've had a couple of mine lay an egg are two when they first go broody after me taking the other hens eggs away from them. Sorry. I hope they hatch in the bator for you!
