6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Here's my little Lorp. Imagine him black and white, instead of pink. :) Yours looks like it certainly could be! It will be interesting to see what it turns into. :)

I love your babies!

Thank you! I am pretty partial to australorps. They have lots of good qualities. They even look good pink! ....I'm sure they would be lovely in blue too...I have so many breeds I am lusting after now! Next thing will be to try to hatch some SFH's though. Then isabelle marans, blue astralorps, etc, etc,ect....

The glow of the brooder light looks good on baby chicks. ;)

I'm dying to get my pie-grabs on some blues and have a BBS flock! MrB agreed that Summer 2015 will be the Summer of the 'Lorp at our house.

If an Aussie is what you want, I hope that's exactly what you've got! :D

I got my Isabelle Marans from Papa Brooder, he has a current listing for eggs on this site. I had a great hatch rate with his eggs. 7 out of 8. I highly recommend him and will probably be getting some Brahma from him for the E-Hal.

Thanks! I am going to get on the list! I have never seen anything so gorgeous. I may have to start Xanax though if I get them as anxious as I got with my own mutt eggs.

I would bring them in and keep them on a bathroom sink, tilted and turn the eggs a couple of times a day.
Thanks everyone for the good advice. I do have one more question. Do I turn the eggs like in the incubator, 45 degrees, back and forth? Or turned upside down (pointy end up)? Sorry if that's a silly question, but I remember something about turning eggs kept in the refrigerator upside down. I have them in the box, round end up, and have been tilting them back and forth about 45 degrees a couple of times. (I don't have them in the refrigerator, lol!)

We have 3 hatchlings and they all have different personalities. Mr Buster(ette) is very adventuresome and bold. Another is shy and the third in the middle. The trio has been ensconced with their Mama in a chicken tractor. Mom's sunbathing at the moment while the babies roam securely nearby. It's been a wonderful day.

They came from a friends flock. I did have a couple of electricity losses, I believe that may have effected them. Not even one tried to pip.

I have hatched 3-4 other times, and never had them ALL die.
That's what made me think maybe a health issue with the adults. I've had power outages during incubation before and always hatched out at least 2 - 3. But it's probably a combination of things. Also our power is usually right back on within the day and this is the first time I've ever done a hatch outside of spring/summer.

Whatever the reason, I'm still really sorry for your loss and hope for a double blessing for you in your next hatch.

Since others are doing their tally, here's mine:
20 set
3 clear, 2 quitters tossed at day 14.
of the 15 that made it to lockdown 14 hatched:
1 Araucana
1 Brabanter
4 Silkies
1 OE? (it was supposed to be an Isbar, but the egg was very Olive colored)
7 Isabelle Marans
That's 70% combined hatch rate (on shipped eggs)!
and 87% on the Marans eggs shipped from CA!

That is a nice mix of breeds, who did you get your eggs from? I definitely want to get a couple of Isbars at some point.
