9th-annual-byc-new-years-day-2018-hatch-a-long

Had three early birds hatch on Friday morning. One didn't make it to the brooder, not sure what happened. Another was found lifeless Friday night. ☹️☹️️ I just bathed and dried the third who had poop butt and a tiny piece of shell stuck to its belly. Six eggs left in the bator. I think I hear some fait peeping in there. Fingers crossed!
We're loving the pics of all the new birds! Lots of "Oooh!" and "Aww!" going on around here, which is helping to distract little ones from the hawk atrack we witnessed this morning. A huge redtail had a blue Cochin two feet off of the ground before dropping her. No attacks by hawks in nearly three years we've had birds, and now we've had three attacks in as many days. We lost a blue Silkie yesterday, a BLRW the day before, and Slippers is likely going to pass from today's incident. A huge housing development has started across the street and so many critters have been displaced from along the creek that runs through the area. And they call it progress.
Here's Shelly Belly.

That happened here too!

Building all around us. Luckily they are building further away now. We did have a wild rabbit live with us for a while last summer though

Oh, I love rabbits! A little farther down the road there are cottontails in a pasture that runs along the creek. So far, no development there. I hope the critters down that way survive the disruption going on here.

Excited for everyone and their new fluffy butts!
From what I've been told, you can harm or kill a bird of prey if they are killing your livestock, but I think the rule is worded like you have to kill it while it's in the act of it killing your birds, Otherwise B.O.P are protected. ? Not sure I'm that good of a shot, but we've had problems with them snatching babies. I try to keep a majority black flock based on the theory that hawks hate crows so are slightly less likely to go after a huge black chicken. I also feed the crows. And I have witnessed them chase off a hawk before.. We haven't had an attack since the spring so maybe the theory has merit.. or it's just luck lol
Ok, I'm struggling with getting my humidity up! I've got all reservoirs filled and three paper towels soak (Its really 3 whole papertowels folded into 3 inch strips accordion style then soaked instead of sponges). But im still only at 60%!

As far as i understand ll hawks and owls are federally protected and ypu need a special permit to kill or capture any B.O.P.
They call me Annie Oakley but i doubt i could hit a hawk in mid turbo flight with a .22 while it was attacking my chicken... yes sure a shot gun but then both the chicken and the hawk will be dust lol.
Couldnt they be considered in attack mood while they are watching and getting ready to attack ?:D

It all just depends if you get caught!:p
I thought if a bird has killed before and is back for more you could shoot it but that is still a grey area rule-wise. And I could be totally wrong. Definitely don't take my word for it without calling a game warden or local sheriff to see what the rules are in your area or at least which ones they enforce :D

Our game warden won't allow a cougar kill let alone a BOP. Besides I like the hawks over my chickens even though they have picked me off a few more than a couple times. I'm just working on getting all runs covered. I quit letting my girls out when the neighbors roofers nabbed my best rooster. Large friendly roo too friendly. Disappeared without a trace one day while they were roofing. Not a stretch to say they did it, I know what a predator kill looks like.
We also have a new neighborhood going in beside us as well. The biggest thing I have to watch for is the rattlers they really get stirred up, two more houses to go then I should be safer.
Two chicks out two more pipped 3 stirring. Granddaughter better hurry and get here.

Well, as much as I’ve enjoyed seeing the hawks from afar in the past, we’re going to be protecting the livestock. I love the idea of covering the run with netting, but with a quarter acre of open area for the hens, it’s just not an option.
We’ve caught foxes, raccoons, and opossum and set them free. It usually takes them a few months to reappear near the house or chicken area.
Neighbors on either side have livestock too, and they’ve also had more trouble with predators lately.
With the new development going on across the way, I think we’ll be the next critters to relocate.

I dont have any issues with new houses or anything. But being on 40 acres and people next door own 110 on one side and behind and the other side have 40 somthing and then just woods in front. We have so many animals!!! And just recently have alot of bear tracts -_-
No relocation of animals here lol we are all about protecting our live stock. Tooooooooooooooooooooooo MUCH money/time goes into raising and maintaining them to let anything get them. And i kinda have an obsession with my babies lol
These hawks are on my watch list they killed 3 of my favorites and original chickens in like 3 weeks...
