I found food grade diatomaceous earth (made by Perma-Guard) EXTREMELY cheap. How do I know if its a dream deal, or a nightmare? How can I be sure its the right stuff? Heres what the site (a health food/organic type site) says:
"Perma-Guard Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth, or diatomite, is not actually an earth; it is a fine powder of microscopic shells created by one-celled plants called diatoms.
It is commonly used to organically control insects, as an internal wormer, and for parasite removal.
It controls insects by physical, not chemical, action; it punctures an insects exoskeleton and absorbs its body fluidsthus posing no harm to warm-blooded life. Moreover, on any surface, this natural pesticide has a remarkable repellency factor. As long as diatomaceous earth is present, insects tend to stay away, making a serious infestation unlikely. The more it is used, the more an environment is created that makes insects feel unwelcome.
When Diatomaceous Earth is used as an organic wormer, it kills any worms or parasites your animals may have.
Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth has many uses, household, with pets, livestock, around plants, and for stored grain.
Pets: Our best friends come in all shapes and sizes. Protecting both dogs and cats with Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth can be accomplished by rubbed into their coats, sprinkled on bedding, spread in the yard, or added to carpets, Diatomaceous earth is very effective against fleas, ticks, lice, and other pests.
Livestock: All livestockhorses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, chickens, and othersbenefit from Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth. It is completely safe and nontoxic. Here are some of its benefits: controls fleas and ticks; stimulates basic metabolism; converts feed better; reduces odor and moisture in barns and stalls; results in healthier coat and hoof condition; keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, noticeably lowering the fly population; reduces annual vet bills; controls worms and internal parasites without chemicals; promotes healthier egg production and stronger eggs; and reduces overall animal stress.
When Diatomaceous earth is mixed into the animals feed, they also benefit from over 14 trace minerals. Here are the recommend daily feeding amounts; Sheep, Goats, and Hogs get 0.5 oz. per day, Dogs and Cats get 0.5 teaspoon per day, Cows and Horses get 12 oz. per day, for Chickens and other livestock that you can not feed individually, weigh their feed and add 2% of that weight in diatomaceous earth."
Is this the right stuff? I had heard of people paying up to $40 for just 5 pounds. Its so cheap on this site I can buy quite alot of it! ALOT!
