I found food grade diatomaceous earth (made by Perma-Guard) EXTREMELY cheap. How do I know if its a dream deal, or a nightmare? How can I be sure its the right stuff? Heres what the site (a health food/organic type site) says:

"Perma-Guard Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth, or diatomite, is not actually an earth; it is a fine powder of microscopic shells created by one-celled plants called diatoms.

It is commonly used to organically control insects, as an internal wormer, and for parasite removal.

It controls insects by physical, not chemical, action; it punctures an insect’s exoskeleton and absorbs its body fluids—thus posing no harm to warm-blooded life. Moreover, on any surface, this natural pesticide has a remarkable repellency factor. As long as diatomaceous earth is present, insects tend to stay away, making a serious infestation unlikely. The more it is used, the more an environment is created that makes insects feel unwelcome.

When Diatomaceous Earth is used as an organic wormer, it kills any worms or parasites your animals may have.

Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth has many uses, household, with pets, livestock, around plants, and for stored grain.

Pets: Our best friends come in all shapes and sizes. Protecting both dogs and cats with Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth can be accomplished by rubbed into their coats, sprinkled on bedding, spread in the yard, or added to carpets, Diatomaceous earth is very effective against fleas, ticks, lice, and other pests.

Livestock: All livestock—horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, chickens, and others—benefit from Perma-Guard Diatomaceous Earth. It is completely safe and nontoxic. Here are some of its benefits: controls fleas and ticks; stimulates basic metabolism; converts feed better; reduces odor and moisture in barns and stalls; results in healthier coat and hoof condition; keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, noticeably lowering the fly population; reduces annual vet bills; controls worms and internal parasites without chemicals; promotes healthier egg production and stronger eggs; and reduces overall animal stress.

When Diatomaceous earth is mixed into the animals’ feed, they also benefit from over 14 trace minerals. Here are the recommend daily feeding amounts; Sheep, Goats, and Hogs get 0.5 oz. per day, Dogs and Cats get 0.5 teaspoon per day, Cows and Horses get 1–2 oz. per day, for Chickens and other livestock that you can not feed individually, weigh their feed and add 2% of that weight in diatomaceous earth."

Is this the right stuff? I had heard of people paying up to $40 for just 5 pounds. Its so cheap on this site I can buy quite alot of it! ALOT!

It's completely harmless to humans (and most animals for that matter). It'll be no more harmful in eggs than the pebble they eat to help them 'chew' their food (even if it's a limestone pebble). I wouldn't fret about it.

My 50 pound bag of DE, ordered from earthworks, was $51 after shipping, and I can tell you, it's a TON of DE. WE used it in the garden, the coop, the dog box and kitten house, and around the house and the kids' playgym, and we have about 40 pound left, LOL. We gave some to the neighbor and sealed the rest in airtight 5 gallon buckets.

I think the per bag cost was around $34 but shipping was a good amount due to the weight.

The kids have had NO ticks since the DE was spread, so it's good stuff

I paid 99 cents a pound at a local feed store. Let me tell you...this stuff is AMAZING!! Our chickens that we rescued were crawling with lice, I mean they had them so bad their feathers were falling out badly.

Within 3 days they were GONE, kapuut, ZIPPO!!

I sprinkle it in their coop, nests, feed and in their run. We also use it in the garden area, a perimeter around our house (for ants). Just amazing, amazing stuff. I plan on stocking up with about 10-20 lbs here soon.

Just don't put it on your flowers or you will kill off all the bees and ladybugs too!

That sounds like a pretty good deal for ordering off the net! I've seen places asking $50, not including S&H! I can get it for around $25, but I'll have to drive just under an hour. I'm thinking that with gas prices, I might as well just order over the internet. I've read that it lasts ages. My frame of mind is that when taking into consideration all that it can be used for and how much it can save you in the long run as a preventative measure combined with the length of time it lasts, the price isn't as bad as it seems.

Sounds like the right stuff. The bag should say 'food grade codex' or something like that..I'd have to go look at my bag to be sure. I buy it locally for $35 per 50lb. bag.
