@RedBanks , the original run was 10 x 10 x 8, built by my husband to enclose the tiny coop that I started with. It has a corrugated plastic roof "so they won't get wet" was my husbands reasoning. That run is predator proof, with 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Then we expanded the area to include space between that run and the vegetable garden and pushed forward 5 feet. We put up a temporary wire covering to keep out the hawks. During the last snow storm, I put a tarp over the top of part of it and plexiglass over the lower part of the original run beause the rain was coming in. Then I added bird netting over an area that they like to roam around. I'm not done yet - right now, the bird netting is up on temporary supports... It is so complicated because we do have hawks. Our Brahma was almost lost to a hawk attack, and while I was fixing the dog crate around the nest box with Broody and chicks, the darn hawk tried to get at the hens that I had let out in the yard. Luckily they ran into the forsythia hedge!!! Usually they are only out in the yard when I am right there.

I would put up pictures, but I'm having to much fun watching the chick!

Another funny Biel story. I have an aviary net but no pen. I had some EMT and rebar. I drove the rebar in the ground, threaded the EMT over it. Then I put an EMT joint on top of the poles. The joints were 90 degrees at the top and the poles stuck in the ground fit into the bottom of the joint. That is hard to explain. So basically I had a square frame 10 X 10 with 4 poles strongly supported by the rebar 5 feet high. I thru the net over it..... I was just experimenting. The net covered the top and hung to the ground. My Biels slipped under the aviary net.and stayed under the protection of the net on their own. They often spent all afternoon there. They were very young and I thought how smart they were.

Too funny! Mine do that too, but the door leads to my bedroom so it's rather inconvenient at times.

You use whatever you have to at the time!
The coop is to the right, the first run is directly next to it, then the extension to the veggie garden which has 2x6 horrizontal beams. I really have to take better photos and organize them!
