A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

He's a handsome bird.

Geez! Its currently 73 degrees here. We are under a tornado watch. Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds & hail expected within the next few hours. Once that initial line passes, the temperature falls and we are expecting ice. What the heck! I hate weather like this.

I just went out to give my birds their scratch grains before dark and found Cinnamon, my 6 mo old jake mounting the dead body of my jenny Cornbread.

I feel like blaming him, but I'm sure it probably wasn't his fault. I don't know. Can a tom crush a hen to death? I checked her all over and found no wounds or plucked patches. They've all been huddling up a lot against the cold lately, but if she was sick, it wasn't obvious. Man, I hate the downside of bird keeping. :(

I'm so sorry :(

r2elk: the tom I thought bred looked nothing like the barred black. although he was black and the only bird at the time that i had that expressed barring in the wings.

but I got several in the bunch (poults) at that time were supposed to be pure slates. I did have a tom blue that looked like the 2nd bird.

it was late in the season when I got this poult. with the barring I assumed the black tom mated with the bourbons. I keep my breeding pure anymore unless I experiment for my own use.

So I will go along with your and ralphie assessment of red slate.

Finnie: Sorry about your loss.

Wow.. You're doing what I plan to do. I like the colors and mixing but it makes more sense to keep the varieties pure for me, for this year anyways.

JJ is not going to be a Daddy again, unless someone else has a Hen that wants his genes. ( You would not get JJ, just his genes!!!)

DO not tell me about your weather!

Well I went from 50°F on Thursday to -27°F this morning and it has warmed up today since it is all the way up to -7°F right now.

I was sitting at the computer when I heard and felt a loud thump as something hit the window very hard. I found this strange looking dazed "turkey" sitting below the window. I was not able to get a better picture as it recovered enough to fly away as I approached.

As long as I had the camera out, I got a few pictures of real turkeys.

Sweetgrass tom

Bearded ladies

The hens have bigger beards than the toms.

Self Blue tom.

Sorry for your loss.  I have never had a tom kill a hen by crushing her.  I have had hens have their sides ripped open by unwanted breeding attempts.  Those wounds are easy to spot.  On the other hand, if a young tom finds a dead hen, he will definitely mount her.

A young Tom will mount an upside dish.

I'm glad that I can stop blaming the pup.

Thank you everyone.
