A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Hi to the new guy!

I was told by a breeder I got a Poult from once, that hens can retain sperm from a mating for several months. He was getting blue poults six months after he sold his only blue slate tom, and he shouldn't have been getting that gene hatching any more. What do you experienced breeders think? How long do we need to be isolating our hens if we want to be sure of the genetics of the offspring?

Potentially a hen can hold viable sperms for the entire laying season after a couple of successful matings.

Feedman I am really starting to like the look of the bourbons. I have always loved the blue slates and the royal palm. So if you have any toms of those breeds I could probably sweet talk my hubby into making the drive to get one. Since we only have the two hens I'll stick with one tom. Might pick up one or two more hens come spring time from local small animal swap. Yeah we got almost a half inch of ice last weekend. Made a four day weekend for the kids. Thank the lord they went back yesterday and no more snow or ice in the forecast!!! The birds were super excited to get out of pen today. It's been so wet their pen is mush. Gotta get it cleaned out and fresh straw out.

I probably have a bourbon, and a royal palm . For pures available. And a blue palm and a blue red bronze.

If you decide on one I could probably work in a weekend I'm off and meet you in Columbia or Jeff city.

Make a bass pro day in Columbia. Or visit my sister in jeff.

Peas do fine in harsh winters in most of the country. I know they are fine here in PA as long as they have a place to get out of the wind. I treat them like chickens in regard to winter hardiness. Turkeys and waterfowl are exceptionally hardy of course, but still need/want a sheltered area to retreat to. They just seem less bothered by brutal winds or driving rain than the chickens, guineas, and peafowl.

@memphis , ditto what dheltzel said. They do just fine. Mine are a bit spoiled and get to hang out with the chickens. I haven't dragged our extra shed over for them yet. Mine will sit outside and get pelted by rain, snow, sleet, frigid cold, you name it. My ducks are the same. I have yet to determine if it's hardiness or stupidity. Maybe both. I just know I don't like going out and carrying them in sometimes. Now my chickens.....one rain drop and they're tucked in on the roosts not laying eggs.

I could only find one picture and that's of my young White male. I just posted the story that goes with the picture on the MN site. I thought he was a goner. I'll see if I can get some better ones for you one of these days. I also have an IB female. I had an IB male and White female, but they became Owl din din a month or two ago. I kept telling them not to roost in the trees.

My Brother in law tries to keep peacocks. They do great his problem is they refuse to go into shelter and spend the nights at the top of trees. He loses the hens when they hide the nest and then try to set. Ground predators take them out. He says finding a peahens nest is nearly impossible.

That's a bummer and they're expensive birds to lose. And true, you'll never find their nests. Once my current two are gone, I'm done with Peafowl for a bit.

No no no.... I dont need a gf or any sort of relationship right now and probably not til summer

I have a little sister who is your age. I don't know if you could handle her though. This one kid in school asked her to dinner and a movie and she said yes.....but only if he could saddle her horse. I don't think that boy has ever seen a live horse or any livestock for that matter. Dinner and movie was a no go, but she already knew that =)

Holm..she sounds like your kind of girl!!

Ok Feedman...post glamour shots of all available bachelors. Stephcraig...show your girls & get their input!!

Gee, we can fix up Holm & Stephcraig's hens right now!!

lol Minnesotanice I cant saddle a horse! I have done it but with help!

That's Okay. Grandpa Ralphie can teach you to saddle a horse...... We can have you married off before the age the Quakers would have thought you too old to get married. BUT we have to rush!!

For those of you with legbars, and I am asking this here because I do not want the drama a simple question can bring on the legbar threads....

Have any of you noticed your eggs look bluer in the nest or low light than in direct sunlight. I can think I have a basket of nice ones and when I get outside they are blue, but have a greenish tinge.. Today's looked more blue than those I just moved to the hatcher from 3-4 weeks ago.. It becomes confusing to us old peoples....
