Hi Sally,

No the Bourbon Reds have been gone for a long time. All I have now are the Slates and Sweetgrass. You need more hens. I try to keep 4 to 5 hens for one tom. It keeps him occupied without wearing out any of the hens. My hens don't all tend to go broody at the same time so it also helps to keep him from going after the hens that are nesting. If you allow your hen to go broody you will need to separate the toms from her. A lone hen penned with a tom when she is sitting causes the tom to take the sitting hen as an invitation to breed. This can lead to broken eggs and injured hens. You should not allow both toms to be with the hen. It can also lead to an injured hen and poor fertility due to the breeding act being interrupted when one tom knocks the other tom off of the hen's back.

I just got my first turkey egg of the year Monday and am expecting the second egg today.

The caruncles as well as the whole head can go anywhere pale pinkish to white, blue or bright red depending on the mood of the tom and what message he is trying to send.

Shame on you, poor kid won't know what to believe. The caruncles and snood expand from the same mechanics that creates a swelling in the appendage of a male human.

The toms do however have an air sac in the breast that they can swell to make their chests seem really impressive and also is used to create the drumming sound when strutting.

Hi all, Welcome to the thread Sally..


My RP is just teasing me still no eggs. I am thinking my RP Tom is worthless. I was in the pen looking for eggs and one of the hens submitted in front of me. The Tom was alongside me. I scooted out the pen and the Tom never even mounted her.

I might need some Turkey Viagra or some of Holm's turkey porn to get things going.
