A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

It's 17° here according to my tablet though it's usualy a few degrees colder than what it says.I'm not looking forward to going out to the flock this morning :/
I woke up to 16 degrees - so it says. but the weather station is 15 miles away in a valley on the Other side of the mountain. So I expect there is at least a 6 degree difference. I have a weather station I need to get setup.

I really am not looking forward to winter - in any shape or form (sigh) Last night, my water hoses were already frozen.

It's hit or miss with my birds. Some go crazy over it, others not so much. I just cut them in half and drop them in the pasture.

When I have pumpkins, my birds use the self opening method. Of course, they taste 10-12 before deciding which one to open. Also whether it is still on the vine or not never enters into their decision.

Mine have been useless for a while now. I hate winter watering. I am going to try and cross a camel with my birds so they can go 6 months without water.

At least the sun helps here, at least for now. hauling 25 gallons of warm water is not fun. Once I put them in their winter housing it warms up nicely even on really cold days.

Our average temps are supposed to be in the 60's. Not happening. Even next week they are forecasting only low 50's. I expect it's a bad harbinger of what is to come.

Today I am hooking up my heated 16 gal tub so that I have liquid water on hand. Two months before I needed to do so last year.

Add some nuclear material, Ralphie - and you can have Tur-nobyl turkeys. Self-heating and needs no water for an explosion of flavor. :)

Same here. I despise winter, especially when I have to go OUT in it. From inside, with a hot drink, I don't mind it too much.

We have the same sort ofissue here weather wise. I'm not sure exactly where the weather station is but it always gives the temperature of what it is down in town and we're 3 miles away and up the mountain. It's amazing the difference in temperature and even precipitation in that sort distance. We have an acurite weather station set up outside that's much more reliable, temperature wise.

Loved the rooster story R2elk! Thats a funny thread.

I hate reading about all the cold weather. It's not too bad here...yet. What I hate is the lack of daylight. I loose all momentum when I get home from work and it's dark....just want to crawl in bed. Blah! My turkeys do like the cooler weather tho.

R2elk...I believe your right. Annie is jealous of my chicken sitter. She lives two doors down so we see her alot.

TURKEYS:barnie
Yesterday I had an Easter pullet slip by me into the pen that has 2 broodies, 11 layers, 5 pullets, the main roo and 2 cx mix sons.. and the 5 turkeys in. The Turkeys regularly hop on their coop and into the pen she came out of. So I was thinking that my concern would be when the boys found her she wouldn't be too happy... I figured I would leave her in until then... I came by 15 min later and the 3 turkeys from this year had her in a corner trying to peck her brains out
I figured she was running up and down the fence acting crazy and the turkeys didn't like it.
She was in shock for a couple of hours, but outside of a ripped comb and scalp she is fine and back out with her flock.

So 2 years ago we started with 4 turkeys 2 bourbon reds and 2 royal palm.
One of the royal palm dies at about 2 weeks.... sigh and the other one was pretty sure it was a people and would scream if I left it alone with those turkeys, but calm down as long as I was holding it..... awwww so cute!
of course it turned out to be a tom.....
grrr! Grumble..... so they got big enough to go out into the grow out pen, so about 8 to 10 inches tall? Give or take. And I walked in one day to find that the one bourbon red that I was fairly sure was a hen had hung herdelf..... now before you go all ' why did you have string in the pen?' Remember I had successfully used this grow out pen for several years for chicks and had no issues...... also the only reason this piece of string was an issue was it had a loop in it....... granted the loop hung about an inch off the ground, so somehow that crazy turkey got her head through that loop that was basically on the ground, oh and it was a big enough loop the turkey could have stepped through it with no problem..... but no this turkey managed to get it wrapped around her out neck and strangle herself...... so I walk in to a dead turkey.....
So we ended up with two tom turkeys..... and then when they got turned out with my layers my egg production mysteriously went down, turned out the little darlings were eating about a dozen eggs a day..xomgredv ht sigh so my plan to breed turkeys that year was foiled and they both got invited to thanksgiving dinner..... so I hope the next go round goes better
