A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I opened the incubator this morning expecting to find black winged bronze type poults (cornish palm or BWB) and some Narragansetts. But to my surprise there were two palm type poults. That means my Narragansett jake is not only split black winged bronze, but also Ccg (bb1 Ccg nn). So when mated to the sweetgrass hens (unintentionally but I set the eggs anyway) they have produced two royal palm daughters. The single BWB type poult I was looking forward to didn't survive. It hatched and then sadly died. So only 1 Narragansett looking poult and two palms in all.

They are feeling themselves this morning. Beautiful group of toms! Do they fight terribly when breeding season is in full swing or do you separate them?

My Red sweetgrass and Narragansett jakes quarrel some but it isn't bad. They were raised together so I think that has helped keep the fighting to a minimum.
on My phone it was hard to see the hens weren't toms

First egg laid today it was a young Red Palm hens first egg, kind of skinny and pointed. She is one I thought I would use for breeding this spring, but she didn't make the cut. So not using her eggs for hatching but it was good with a sausage patty on a bun for late lunch. I have found my first eggs of spring come from my first year laying hens. March 9th has been my lucky day most years for first egg. A few years a day or so earlier and a few years after with the latest being the 14th, earliest 5th. All nests have been worked, in all but one of my breeding pens so won't be long for some of them to start any day now.

Just a small update on the Turkey Color Calculator.
I added a drop-down menu, so people unfamiliar with the genotypes can select the varieties and calculate the offspring.
