A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Just a small update on the Turkey Color Calculator.
I added a drop-down menu, so people unfamiliar with the genotypes can select the varieties and calculate the offspring.

Turkey Color Calculator
Update on the update. šŸ˜‚

Also added a section on the bottom of the site where the genes are explained.

I'm working on it since a couple of months. I'm adding features every couple of weeks, to make it easier to use.
VERY MUCH APPRECIATE all the work you are doing with your calculator to help all turkey breeders/enthusiast. Let alone how it helps reestablish the varieties of the heritage turkey. Thank-you for all your time spent doing this for us and the heritage turkey.

That is a creative addition to the calculator. I could have used this feature when the genotypes were all Greek to me. Lol
I think it will help people learn the genotypes. They can select a variety and the calculator will show the genotype.
Maybe I will even highlight the alleles that were change, so it will be even easier to spot what's going on. šŸ˜…

Thank you so much for doing this.

I’m getting better at it but what’s hardest for me is identifying a genotype based on the appearance of a bird.
Austria89 's book helped a lot. And the turkey genetics 101 group on fb. Understanding what makes each variety what it is helps a ton. First identifying the base, and then any color modifiers the bird has. Like a cornish palm is simply a BWB with a single cg gene (b1b1 Ccg). You can identify birds with cg by noting silver edged feathers on the wings and body. Add a single copy of red and you get Red Phoenix. Add slate and you get blue red phoenix (b1 b1 Ccg Dd Rr), which is a variety I hope to see come out of my project pen this spring.

It will definitely help! I originally learned genotypes from what Porter had listed on his website under each variety, just referencing back to those until I had it memorized. Being able to select a preset variety in the calculator and see what genes make that variety is a very useful addition to the tool, it’s wonderful you added it.
