A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

With hatching eggs, everything depends on how well the person you buy them off of packages them and how gentle to postal service is with them. I have a dozen shipped eggs in my incubator now and let me tell you, the post office is NOT gentle right now with Christmas season here. They were packaged wonderfully and still arrived with one broken and every air cell detached. I can only see developement in 2 of 12

if they hatch, I may have to name them something like rough and tough since they survived the journey. Then again, I don't think those are appropriate names for silkies lol.
Very impressive! Sky hasn't been giving me any eggs over the past few days and I keep finding her "nesting" in random places lately. I hate to keep them confined but I have a lady that wants to buy some chicks and hatching eggs in just over a week. I may not have much choice. They're going to be so mad at me lol

Something that most people don't realize is that you can ship hatching eggs by UPS or FedEx. If you want to pay extra FedEx even has a special handling method available. FedEx is really good about getting packages delivered by ground within 3 days for most places in the continental U.S. Just be sure that they don't ship them by air as air shipping can be very harmful to hatching eggs.

Another thing I did not know!

I have the perfect solution for Coffee, SO glad we can all make these decisions for her without her input, it is so much easier than having to listen to what she wants....

We fix Ginger and she has a lapper. She take Porter as a breeder. and 2 self blue hens..

She has already said she will not incubate,,,,ROFL,, like the hens would not go broody! Everyone that has had a hen for a year and not have it go broody raise their hands!

Yep, she will get babies,,

This is the babies she would get:

2.5 Female Barred Self Blue
12.5 Male Barred Self Blue
12.5 Female Jersey Buff Slate Semi-
12.5 Male Jersey Buff Slate Semi-
12.5 Female Rusty Lavender
12.5 Male Rusty Lavender
12.5 Female Self Blue
12.5 Male
Self Blue

I wonder if I could do that?

Does it affect their personality?

I should ask it anyone on the Minnesota thread can do that.

There is a thread on the Meat Birds ETC forum that shows how to caponize a rooster. It will affect their personality because without testosterone they no longer have the male drive. It also improves growth rate.

Before the Cornish-X chickens were created there was always someone around fairly close that would turn a person's roosters into capons. The purpose was to facilitate rapid growth and create bigger than normal chickens for roasting. I still on occasion have been able to find 10+ lb. capons for sale in the grocery store.

Broke out the second incubator today. It's warming up and getting ready to go. Hubby asked me today what I was doing worth all the turkey eggs on the counter. I told him that I'm going to hatch them and that I'm setting them on Sunday. He was worried that they wouldn't be good until then lol. I'm going to be in the dog house tomorrow though. He doesn't work tomorrow... I have shipped eggs coming tomorrow that he knows nothing about  I was hoping they would come a day early, like every other package that I've tracked over the past couple weeks. No, they're coming tomorrow. I'm in trouble lol. He has no idea that my incubator is full.

Oh geez Aurora! Your DH may insist you start going to "Incubator Anonymous " meetings!

Can one of you guys explain "Small Eye" defect to me? How does it affect a turkey? Was trying to find more information on it and couldn't.

Ralph...have you figured out how to caponize yet? I'm still hoping Coffee considers Ginger. He doesn't need to be part of a breeding program. He can just be a great pet (lawn ornament )!

I have seen the videos on roosters, I am trying to visualize myself doing it to Ginger. The visionalization ( new word there) is not going well. I know I would need to tie him down. I am just not sure of this whole Idea.

Do they make Turkey condoms? Maybe we could get him one of them.

I am guessing it would take a couple good size guys to hold Ginger down if we start cutting on his stuff.

It has been really nice knowing you...You will be missed.

I guess I was destined to get caught with these eggs. I checked the tracking and here, the person who shipped them switched the last two numbers of the zip code, otherwise they would have been delivered today :/ they were at the post office in another town about 45 minutes away. They should be really good and scrambled when they arrive :(
