Do all turkey hens go broody? Should I expect my hens will want to brood the year?

I think so.... A broody hen is a PITA, Even Ethel is a PITA unless she is sitting on eggs, then she is in a trance like state. I am going to force her to hatch eggs inside a pen. it worries me when she does it in the wild.

I go through to many highs and lows, wondering if she is still alive or dead.

I have no idea. but I doubt it, they are very intent on setting.

I had a hen last year that sat for almost 3 months, I could not get her off the bad eggs. I did switch them out but it was so stinky and bug invested under her they never had a chance..

It was terrible. She attacked us viciously when we tried to move her....

I wonder if we could make broody turkey hen boxing a sport?

Geez...guess I can expect to go a few rounds with the girls this year!

Does everyone let their hens hatch a brood?

Did everyone catch the fact that Feisty has converted her shy Big Bird into a lapper? And Ginger is also now a confirmed lapper. I'm still blown away with how easily turkeys bond with humans. I'm really becoming a turkey nerd.....:/

I let them all try last year. I only had 4 but, I lost 2 to predators during the setting time.

Ethel and my old blue one raised hatches, but blue ripped her skin off her chest to the point it would be fatal, so we ate her. I miss her though, I know what an oxymoron that seems like.

This year I am going to let them all set in cages/pens. The problem is if you let them out for an hour they are gone and hiding a nest. Trying to fins a turkey nest is an act of futility.

On another note I was making another cup of coffee and looking out the window to the turkey pen JJ was pacing back and forth in front of the entrance to the turkey house,,,,AND (trumpets rallying) He went inside!!!
