Holm - so sad to hear about your cow

Ralph - that is the cutest little chick, and it seems to be walking fine! I love how when you touch it with a finger, it hops and starts walking

Aurora - Emu babies are so darn cute. I told DH I wanted one a while ago but his answer included words I can't say here . Then I thought about cleaning up after a bird that size and changed my mind lol.

My year old Bourbon red hen has started to sprout a small beard.

So I now have 2 Bourbon with beards.

Sounds like it is more common then I thought for hens to have beards . Big Bird, Annie and Ethel all have little beards.... If I can get Coco to start getting closer to me, I'll have to check if she has one too!

EThels beard is gone now! I tried to find it the other day and could not find a nubbin even...


Is anyone else having trouble with young hens wanting to go broody and acting stupid before it is time for them to go broody?

So I now have 2 Bourbon with beards.

Almost all my blue slate turkey hens have a little chest hair

- it seems the alpha hen starts first, then the rest from about a year on.
