I really don't know for your State you might need something more than a light bulb. Do you go on the Minnesota thread? There maybe some old timers on there that could tell you better. But Walnut Hill just described a wonderful set up for very cold weather like you have there.

Yeppers I go to the Minnesota thread.

A light bulb is a waste of money. I have heater bases on steel founts now. I just think there should be something better. I think what he described would freeze here. My coop gets really cold, if I do not pick up eggs every couple hours they freeze and crack.

I live in SE Michigan and my coop is an unheated fabric building. Only during sustained temps of 10F or below do the hoses freeze, the stock tank heaters keep the barrels clear of ice.

Joining!!! Man u all have some pretty birds!! Right now we only have 1 tom/jake who thinks he is quite the stud muffin. He is a Royal Palm-Bourbon RedX. I am hoping to get some hens here soon for him. We had 2 hens in February but an owl got our slate hen and he cut up the Narragansett hen pretty bad and she past away

hmmmm

I may have to try something of this sort. I do get sustained periods of way below -10... I will keep this in mind. Water in winter is a pain....but then so is water in summer.

Your tom is very handsome. He looks very similar to my Sweetgrass tom.

Holm When are you getting your poults?

Is the guy in Milaca hatching any yet?

She does not have any hatching till end of the month or the first week in May. But I want to try and get some big hens for him as he is quite lonely...
