Grats on the broody..

I am trying to keep my turkeys from going broody, I want eggs!!! Eggs!! and more eggs.

I think I have a Dixie rainbow going broody. When I went to get eggs from under her, she growled at me, and attacked me. I even tried the two handed method, one hand going in high, one going in low, she was able to get both hands at once. When I finally decided to try a new method, I lifted her out of the nest she jumped on top the nest sang the egg song and gave me a nasty gesture with her hand. She has never acted like that before. She was not in the nest last night though.

MM for the 15 minutes that Clyde sat on the turkey eggs, did 5 look like the right number? A Dixie rainbow is bigger than Clyde, right? How many do you think I could put under the rainbow?

Did I mention I have been experimenting with my hatcher, I have found an open pill bottle filled with water gives the hatcher an ambient humidity of 50%. I am going to try that next time. I can always take it in and out as needed.

She sure sounds broody to me! Clyde is about a third the size of my Dixie. Pearl is wider and heavier than Dixie, but I would say they are very similarly sized. I will post a pic if you like.
I think 5 turkey eggs under Clyde would have been pushing the limit just a tad. I had 5 Dixie eggs under her (and when compared, they are the same size as turkey eggs, just not pointy so the shape is different). I think the shape made it a bit harder for her to completely cover them.
Not that any of that matters... I think you could easily get 7 or more turkey eggs under your Rainbow. Give her a few, then add another couple, see how it goes!

I love broody hens! I find the growl hilarious. It gets me every. single. time.

SOOOOO... I could not contain my curiosity. I just HAD to see if I could see anything in the eggs. I almost stopped, but just couldn't take it.
Here are my day 5 or 6 (since I don't know whether or not to count Clyde time) findings:
3 Absolutely viable!!!!
2 With blood spot, not veining just yet, but slightly unstable air sack.

I sure hope they keep on growing! I am going to candle again next Monday. I am so incredibly excited!!!
Check yours again Ralphie!!

I am so glad yours are viable! I was worried I sent you duds.

I will check mine in a day or two.

I am working on chicken/turkey coop today. I mucked it out. I have a removable wall in it for ease of cleaning. I am trying to make a more secure wire wall to the ceiling the dang guineas keep breaking thru the deer netting so I need to get real wire,

I am going to build nests in there and move all the chickens there next winter, except the creamettes which will get the coop the chickens are using now. I have the netting down so the blue slates are on the honor system to stay in there pen.

I want to get it done today or tomorrow so I can move Bert and his girls into it. I am hoping the slates and the meat chickens get along without a lot of squabbles. The turkeys seldom go into the building, they seem to prefer being outside.

When I opened the outside door to the coop, the one I thought might becoming broody, she growled at me, and I still had another door to open to get to her. Such Attitude! I might give her a few eggs and see what happens. I had a turkey raise chickens last year, might as well have a chicken raise turkeys this year.

I found a nest with 5 chicken eggs and one Turkey egg, I wonder how long it has been there. I put all the eggs on the "to be hatched rack" I am a little afraid to eat these.

I am not sure if she is broody or not, I never saw her in the nest all day long. It could be she is in a stolen nest, I will know if she brings me babies in a few weeks. When I collected eggs there was not one bird in the coop.

I found, what I think is a guinea eggs today!

It's getting to be like Easter everyday here!

MM.. Break out Mike's hard stuff!!

I just candled. 9 turkey eggs, 8 with blood vessels and 1 possibly has them.. 60% sure on the one.

7 creamette eggs and 7 have chicks in them all at about the same stage.. BUT one has his toes in a weird spot.

Beings I am older than dirt, I wake up early in the morning. I candled my turkey eggs on the turner and placed them in the incubator. New babies set for May 8!

I had 13 eggs, bakers dozen so that it is not an unlucky number. I started to mark the air sacs, but I found it very hard with my old eyes to see it. I could see it on some, but to be honest, had I marked them all, I would just be guessing. From my first candle on the turkey eggs where I thought I had no developing eggs, I have learned they all had very easy to see air sacs. That is something I will look for when I candle these in a week or so.

I have 6 creamette eggs in the turner, I was going to put them in the incubator too, but when I checked the hatch date I saw it would be May 1st, that is when my first turkeys hatch. I thought having creamettes and turkeys in the hatcher at the same time could be a problem. Any thoughts on that?

And on the DO NOT TELL MY DW department. I am thinking I need a 3rd incubator. 2 to use as incubators and one as a hatcher...... Do you think she would notice a third incubator in her dining room?

I always set chicks to hatch with my turkeys. I also brood them together.I use the chicks as tutors to teach the turkeys to eat, drink & find the heat. They do so much better with chicks with them. As for the bator...I have a cabinet & 4 styros...ummmm, I say go for it!

Okay, I am going to put the 6 creamette eggs in the incubator, if the turkeys eat the chickens I will never forgive you!!

I would love a cabinet............ I wonder if she would ever notice it.
