Notice how he had a scared face hiding under the chair...

On the cold chick topic- Hopefully they are all okay!

I have moved my poults outside. Last night was their first night in the outdoor brooder. Today their first full day outside. I was worried at how chilly they seemed so I was adjusting stuff, snuggling them, etc.
I set them down and instead of going to the heat, they went straight for the grass to peck around. Guess they were just playing me for some snuggles.
Guess I am completely okay with being tricked for a snuggle!

MM you are so easy!

That's why the turkeys love you.

My BBW and BBB are loving the tractor, I cannot believe how much grass they chew on. My cold babies seemed fine last night, I have not checked on them today, but I looked out the window and saw the heat lamp was on.

A couple of my heritage breeds poults step out the chick door and then run back in. None of the Creamettes come out the door. They are way to spoiled to go outside I guess.

BUT Bert's babies go outside, especially one little girl, their behavior is so CX it is unbelievable. And they are huge compared to the other chicks. I think I like toads. Those of you with egg laying CX's need to get them bred to a Red ranger or Dixie rainbow, the chicks are so cute and look amazing. I am going to try and keep the little girl and a boy alive to raise second generation toads. I think, it should help "set" the genetics if I inbreed them, then line breed them. I would prefer to line breed them now, but there is no line out there to breed them too.

Yesterday I went to the coop to see the babies and when I got there the babies were gone!! I thought the cat got them but no they were out free ranging in the pasture with the hens at 3 weeks old. But 2 cows really wanted to kill them!!

You can set your hygrometer by putting some salt in a small cap (like a milk cap) then just dampen the salt. Don't get it to wet.
Put the cap in a zip lock baggie and put the hygrometer in it. Leave it for 6 hrs. If it does not say 70% humidity, then take it out and adjust the screw in the back to say 70%.
That is how I tested and set mine.

It is true. I am a complete push over when it comes to baby poultry. Heck, when it comes to teenager and adult poultry too.
Yesterday I was in the house and heard a turkey crying. I poked my head out and they had wandered to the complete other end of the yard, were in really tall grass, and couldn't figure out how to get back!
I watched for a bit to see what happened... Low and behold, Pearl waddled over to them to help them find their way. She stayed within 20 feet of them the rest of the day.
Maybe it was the high protein feed she could smell on their breath that lured her in, maybe it was maternal, but it was SO cute.

I am so excited about the toads!! I am going to have to search out a Dixie roo. I am curious to hear how they turn out. Are you going to restrict their feed?

Actually that is the test for 75% humidity. The problem is that while you can calibrate the hygrometer easily for 75% humidity, that will not make the hygrometer accurate over the full range of the humidity it measures.

Another problem with cheap hygrometers is that the lowest that they will measure is 20% humidity. You can get down to 0% humidity but the hygrometer will still read 20% humidity.
