A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Why am I having visions of Penguin quietly /secretly having "dates" with all of Ralphie ' s hens and come hatching time....nothing but little Penguins!

Sorry...still obsessing over a toms viability. ...

That would be a nightmare!

Yep I am obsessing too! I need to get my toms out of the pen with hens. I am not sure what I should do. I need more pens!

Has anyone heard from MM?

I miss her, Is she kicking her DH out until he allows deck turkeys?

BTW we had a deck incident here yesterday. It was so funny. DW came in from her "turkey on deck meltdown", and said " I wonder when they are going to learn they can't be on the deck!"....

The proper response, I found, was not laughing......

I am not ordering it, because I have enough turkeys. I would think it would be a great "Starter kit". I want to be more selective at this point.

I am hoping I can get the new varieties by doing egg exchanges with some of you.

It could mean having to change my plans a tad though. I assume most people would want JJ and Ethel DNA and not the rest of them. If people want Penguins DNA, I might just make turkey Jerky out of him and send jerky sticks.

Do any of you know how often a hen has to mate with a tom for the eggs to be good. I know a chicken can go 3 weeks. Is it the same with a Turkey?
Just mate a Self Blue (aka Lavender) with a Bourbon Red and everyone can have their own JJ & Ethel since that is the pairing that produces 100% Rusty Slates.

It has been claimed that one mating with a tom can carry a turkey hen through laying season. My experience is that even with multiple matings it is common for the first egg to be infertile. My turkeys typically start mating about a month before they start laying.

I would make sure that there are at least several matings.

So...who is ordering the Porter half price surprise box?

Ralph...I can hop over to the Surviving Minnesota thread & do a turkey sales pitch. If you rehome a few of those boys you could make room for the surprise box! :)
Memphis maybe if I ordered some BB whites( which I'm not going to do....) I'll send them all to you and say there from porters!

I need a Bourbon red!

But then, if everyone had and JJ and Ethel they would not be so special.

I am going to leave JJ with the hens quite often. I think Ginger will be the only other one that gets to mate. I might give him a couple self blues just because I have so many. The rest of the guys might as well enter a monastery.

There you go Ralphie....R2elk has solved all your problems! Few Red Bourbons and all is good! Maybe Aurora will send you some Adam eggs. He's quite the hunk!

I'm stil wrapping my mind around the breeding thing.

Hi everyone! Just asking some advice really I've been having some leg problems with my 6 year old bbw tom he's had a very swollen hock of which an abcess formed he's on two different types of antibiotics and anti inflammatory and also the abcess has been lanced and cleaned inside with saline. He's totally fine from the neck up eats and drinks as normal and poops fine. He's bed is straw and changed once a week and his food is layers pellets wheat and corn with a grass paddock to graze. I'm finding that his toe nails are abit long and could be one of the reasons why he's struggling to walk. Has any one ever clipped or cut their tukeys toe nails and how much do I cut? Any help would be great I know he's old for a broad brested white and he's no heavier than normal he does weigh around 45lb but that's never stopped him before his hock abcess

Wow he is old for a BB. Could it be with the swelling and all it just hurts to walk on it? Sounds like you've taken care of the abcess and have him on the antibiotics...only thing I can think of is it may hurt to walk on it. Maybe someone would have a better idea over on the Emergency Thread.
