A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Hey Holm,
If a turkey mating lasts 70 plus days, I would only need Mr T for a few days. Or could bring you the hens for a few days. NO sense us making a longer trade is there?

I would be glad to drive 3 hens up to you for a couple weeks.

Penguin, Ginger and Turkules at R2elks would devalue his property and make his neighbors hate him!! But it would be a fun "conference".

I would have to get Ginger and Penguin back, I am so glad they are leaving today!

Penguin, Ginger and Turkules would not survive at my place let alone not even be welcome in the first place.

I would recommend at least a week since with AI the recommendation is to do the AI every 7 days.

I also recommend taking the hens to the tom rather than bringing the tom to the hens. One of the reasons is to keep him relaxed in familiar surroundings. Another reason is that there is only one Mr. T and you really wouldn't want to be responsible if something happened to him on your watch.

ROFLMAO.... Poor Penguin his reputation proceeds him.. I sure hope the guy getting them is happy with the boys. I have a feeing if they do bother him too much, they will find themselves inside an oven.

Ralph...my family has me under close observation! I'm actually working with a young dog, hence a few agility pieces. Turkeys are facinated. Might as well train one of them along with the dog....

Keeping my fingers crossed for Ginger & Penguin. Hope goes all goes well for them!

Ralph, you'll have pens for JJ & Sidekick. Ginger & Penguin are gone. I guess Porter is remaining a bachelor. Don't you have another slate tom?

R2elk...do you separate your tom's into breeding pens too? Or do you just have one guy, or two, with all the girls?

For breeding season I only allow one tom in with the flock of hens. Multiple toms in with the hens results in decreased fertility and injuries to the hens unless one of the toms is clearly dominant over the other.

I sometimes keep multiple young toms over the winter just to make sure that I have a tom for breeding season. At the start of breeding season I try to sell off any extra toms. If that doesn't happen the extras get booted out of the pen and eventually become someone's dinner.

I have 9 toms total.
WAY TOO MANY as R2elk says.

Ginger and Penguin leaving gets me down to 7

Sidekick and JJ going to breeding pens is down to 5..

Porter whom I am keeping for Coffee gets me down to 4. (Porter is going into a pen so he does not cause me breeding problems, Even in a pen if there is another Tom in sight, JJ and sidekick will be so worried about the free tom they do not get their job done and they wear off their chest feathers pacing the fence.

I need to decide what to do with the 4. As best I recall there are 2 blues and 2 self blues. Nothing special, so they could just go to freezer camp.

I might put a blue with 2-3 self blue hens, not sure yet.

ROFLMAO,,, The pain pill must gave kicked in,,,

I have a mental picture of Turkules, Penguin and Ginger bearing gifts ( candy bars and flowers) walking up R2elks drive and R2elk standing there with a shotgun telling them to peddle their wares somewhere else!

I dont know if I can take hens right now. I am already pavked too the brim and am adding more birds from Heidi soon. Un less (I hate to say this) we waited till next year and I quick find a Royal Palm hen and I could get you hens and toms like my tom.

Yeah...R2elk was pretty clear about Penguin & Ginger!

Ralph, any thoughts to add a Bourbon hen?

R2elk....I know you breed Slates. Do you ever add another variety, like a Bourbon, for diversity?
