A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

That's why I was asking how long you kept them. I know they can be a little iffy on the front end. However, maybe you just keep those silkies in the brooder with them!! LOL! Poor silkies....you could wear them out with the poults!!

I've never found poults hard to raise at all. I've always had them with chicks to teach them, but they are more trainable than chicks. If I pick up feed between my fingers, only the poults rush over to peck at it. If I so much as point closely to the feed, they get so excited and start eating it eagerly even though I saw them picking at it causally like the chicks only moments earlier. Then there is the fact that with a little attention they want more, so the tame ones come to me even at a week old and stand still while I slide my hand under them and lift them up. The chicks never do that. That's why I tell my customers that chicks are the "gateway drug" to turkey poults, LOL. Once you've raise a poult, the chicks just seem so "ordinary".

I agree completely Dheltzel! Its so interesting how turkeys bond so strongly with people! And seek out attention. I think most of us here would pick turkeys over chickens... if we had to choose!!

The poults are all doing great so far. I saw one getting a drink on its own, two took little bites of food. I did need to put one back in the bator for a while though. It looked like it got knocked over and couldn't get back up to cuddle with everyone. It was too cold and took me a little bit to hear it back up. Time to go out and get the big garage brooder up and running. I need to move these older chicks out there and make room in here for the ones due to hatch on Wednesday lol. I'm going to be overrun!

I have been outside working on the pens and coops all day.

I made bigger chicken doors in the creamette pen so the turkey hens can go inside. Ethel appreciated it.

I put lights on all my coops with hens in them. I am trying to get more toad eggs. I also want the Sussex to lay eggs, So far I have only gotten 2 eggs from them and that was over a week ago.

The Toms decided to not go into the pen tonight. They were all sitting on the outside edge of the pen. I made them all get down and go in, 4 went right in but had that "gee whiz, do I gotta" look and walk. I can almost see them kicking the dirt as they walk.

JJ just sat on the fence and waited for me to pick him up and carry him in. He is limping so I did not mind carrying him. Besides holding him is fun.

Porter and Sidekick were belly buttons. The went the wrong way around the fence. then around the turkey house complaining the whole time. But they did go in when we got back around to the door.

Sounds like a productive day Ralph! Any idea why JJ is limping. Seems he doesn't mind being carried. Turkeys are just cool!

Fiesty....I have bird withdrawal all the time. I spend a little time with them before work & hurry home to see them in the evening.

Daisy has a big bald spot between her shoulders! I may get the molting picture of my dreams after all!
