That was my thought too, who would guess are resident turkey guru would have owned a goose!
That was geese and I had them for many years. I had Africans and they were absolutely the best watch dogs I ever had. They would alarm day or night for legitimate reasons. One of my best stories involves a BBB turkey hatching a couple of goose eggs and how the surviving gosling ended up back with the geese.
ROFLMAO!! That would be funny, Did the turkey go nuts when the geese first hit the water?
BTW I really should not say much about geese while I own Guineas.... I just came in from checking on the chicks in the shed. On the way there I saw the guineas had an EE hen trapped in the turkey breeding pen, I had two doors open on the pen and they must have blindsided the EE. They were tormenting the crap out of the poor hen. I saved her. I guess it is time I get the new guinea/bachelor pad done. As soon as I stop collecting guinea eggs it is becoming the young bachelor pen...
If they were not such good watch dogs and bug eaters I would not have them, because of the trouble they cause. A peaceful barnyard seems to be the enemy of Guineas.
One should never let a BB hen hatch eggs. They just don't have the grace that heritage hens have. The first gosling that hatched got stepped on and was kaput when I found it. The second gosling got squashed and couldn't stand up. I used rubber bands to pull its legs together and brooded it in the basement. Once it got improved enough to be able to walk without the rubber bands, I would take it out for walks. During one of those walks the geese who would not let me within 20 feet of them spotted the gosling. These were yearling geese who had never hatched an egg. One of the hens began to approach the gosling and me. The gosling hid between my feet for protection. The goose came as close as she needed to be in order to stretch out her neck as far as possible and take that gosling from between my feet. She then herded that gosling back to the other geese while keeping an eye on me.
She took that gosling and raised it. She did a fine job with it.
Geese are so much better watchdogs than guineas that it isn't funny. Their alarms are legitimate where guineas create many false alarms. I house my guineas separately from the rest of my poultry. They don't create any trouble when all of the poultry are free ranging at the same time. Because they are housed separately there is no attacking of the other poultry. They have enough to do with just picking on each other.
I will never have guineas! They sound annoying!
And trying to walk through a yard/field or area inhabited by geese and ducks without stepping on a land mine is not annoying??
I dont mind land mine. As long as I dont step im them.... The geese poop in the water and the turkeys poop on the grass by the stream so I never really step in them.
