Oh yea, I've booked marked that site. I love it and have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the different colors. Of course I wish there were even more pictures at all different ages and angles. Better yet, I'd like to be close to a place with all them so I could go look in person.

If we were going with my completely uneducated guess I'd say he's probably a barred bronze. I don't have the experience with turkeys to really know a lot though.

We got him to gobble by whistling the theme to Zelda though. It especially upsets him if he hears it coming from the bathroom, since it's a high up sound I guess.

My nearly uneducated guess is maybe...... If he is a dark bronze and the rest of the pattern comes in later, but for now the patterning is not right, It is very possible the person that sold them to you as a bronze did not even know what he had. Add to that the combinations possible thanks to Dr Punnett and the turkey's ability to very the way dominant and recessive genes are expressed....

On the other hand the only way to get a barred black with a bronze is to bring in the B from a black.....So I just do not know.....


I do have a theory though,, if one of the parents was a rusty Slate. and it was colored just right someone may not tell it from a bronze. Rusty slates can look like a lot of other things. This years molt has left JJ looking almost bronzish....... That would give you a barred black...

But my bets guess is..I don't know..

Memphis-yes he is, one of the main reasons I was hoping he was female. He snuggles with the chickens right now, and I don't have any roosters. But I know folks say they will try and mate come spring so that will mean either isolation during that time or we will need to get more which we don't really have room for. He was supposed to be dinner, but we got attached. :0

Hmmm, that is interesting and I'll have to think on it so I can wrap my mind around it. I'll also be reading the other site I was given. He came from a local feed store who got him from a local hatchery, whom I don't know the name of. I know that the breeder only had that first group of turkey's where Knothead came from. They were supposed to have a few more batches come through but apparently something went wrong with the last two hatches and none hatched on one and the other died just after hatch.

@mimsy this is what one of my Standard Bronze looked like at 7 months old.

What a pretty boy! I'll have to take a new picture once Knothead is bigger so I can compare the two at the same age.

Out of the 5 turkey eggs that went to lockdown 3 hatched. 2 external pipped and died.

My welsummer eggs I have 19 of those that have hatched.

6 turkey eggs goto lockdown tomorrow.

Forgot what pen they came out so they will be a surprise if any hatch.

So I am wanting to bring in a solo burbon red hen into my trio. This poor hen has been alone for 4 to 6 months and I offered to rehome her. She is actually a hatch mate of my other burbon reds but they have been separated since last summer. Are they mean like chickens or can I put them together right away when she comes tomorrow?

They will have to put the new bird in her place in the pecking order. You should not put her directly in with your turkeys until after she has successfully passed a quarantine period to establish that she is not bringing any disease or parasites with her..

Aurora.... if you divide your 100 feet of fencing into four 25 foot sides you'll be providing the 650 square feet of lounging space. Divided by however many turkeys you have....which I've lost track of! I'm going to say it should be a nice pen for them.

Couple things I do in the hot & humid south:

Obviously shade is huge
I have misters along one section of fencing & the birds will hang out there.
I hang box fans on their coop to keep the air moving.
I have a small kiddie pool. All chickens & turkeys will stand in it. Just about 2-3 inches of water. The turkeys will actually lay down in it & throw water around like a dust bath. I empty this each evening due to poopies!
I also provide several 2x4 roosts by the misters in the shade. These are only a foot off the ground but they do use them.

Heat scares me...I try hard to keep them comfortable.

Thanks for that I did plan to put a kiddie pool in there for them to use if they desire. I have a total of 5 adults and 9 young'uns right now. We will be using trees to support the fencing and the entire area will be shared though, near the one edge, the sun will shine in a few feet if they feel like sunbathing. I'm hoping to use their coop as a wall and branch the fencing off from there so that should add another 10 or so feet in. I guess we'll see what happens I'll try to get pictures once it's all set up. Maybe them I'll be able to let the babies run loose too.they should be able to escape with that much room.

Aurora, that sounds like it should work. I still can't believe how big the mottled got. Are your hens still trying to go broody?

Eve is very broody. Her butt has been parked for at least a week. Everyone else seems to have snapped out of it but I'm only getting 1 egg a day. Eve isn't being snappy or puffing up or anything but she cries like a baby everytime I check under her for eggs and obsessively pulls the ceramic egg that she's stirring on back under her. I think I'm going to give her a couple half baked eggs from the bator next time I get in it.
