A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

My son is doing Bourbon Red Turkeys as his 4-H project. The show is next Wednesday and he is selling a pen of 3 (1 male and 2 hens) the weight for a pen of 3 has to be no less than 36 lbs. Right now they are at 30 lbs. I am feeding them 30percent purina show chow and adding 8 oz of champion drive to 10 lbs. of feed. Any ideas on how I can get them to the 36lbs. Before next week?

Here is the update on the predator..

Soon it will be an ex-predator, I hope.

Go get it Ralph. Freezer burned meat works good as bait also. I made a good raccoon last week using a turkey egg for bait.

I had a visitor today picking up keets. It seemed strange that all of the poultry were under cover. As we returned to her car, a big Great Horned Owl took off from one of the trees. No poultry missing and activity returned to normal once the owl flew away.

JR - I just used some old plywood and built a couple of 24x24x24 boxes for my turkey hens. Given what everyone else told me about them being fine with nests against the wall on the floor - that's where I put mine and they seem to like them. I have one hen that will sometimes opt for the chicken nests which are raised and much smaller. They don't seem to be too picky - if I put an egg in it, they'll lay theirs in that spot

I agree, feisty, they'll lay them just about anywhere. One of our hens likes to lay eggs in my dad's desk chair in the garage (either that, or he's laying them.)

Glad you found the culprit, Ralphie! Hopefully you can get rid of it.

I couldn't find a closer pic of my turkey nest, but my hens love my dog's old dogiloo doghouse. I push it so the opening is up against the fence since they love traveling the fence for nest sites. It stays dry inside.

One of the poults was blind in one eye. It has a "blue" eye.
From what I've read this is normally an indication of inbreeding. And as all the ones I have are siblings,I will be getting additional birds(don't tell my wife)
