I have had exceptions to all the rules on which sex it is.

A couple months ago I thought I had 2 black hens now I have 2 black toms..

Some just make it hard to tell..

Turkey showed up showed early fall and just never left. Was young. So is at least 9 month old.

Feedman, I would think the head feathers would mean hen at that age. Just my guess. It always surprises me how many people have turkeys just walk out of the woods....

Hi all, Welcome to the thread Sally..


My RP is just teasing me still no eggs. I am thinking my RP Tom is worthless. I was in the pen looking for eggs and one of the hens submitted in front of me. The Tom was alongside me. I scooted out the pen and the Tom never even mounted her.

I might need some Turkey Viagra or some of Holm's turkey porn to get things going.

on a serious note, what size box and what type should I give this turkey to lay eggs in?

ok folks, have another question... if the hens quit squating, does that mean the tom did his job?

My hens will continue to squat until they quit laying.

They may take a short break if I let them brood a clutch of eggs. But if I take the babies they will resume in a week or 2 if it's still early in the year.

They may be shy and not presenting themselves in your presence.

Thermometer is acting up and the incubator was at 102 all afternoon. Looking back and forth between two thermometers I'm not sure what temp it really is. I think 3 would be a better number...can't hurt to know for sure! It's not a big deal, two or three degrees off...but still!

What incubator do you have?
102 depending on the temp controller is not bad.
As the heating element shuts off it will still have residual heat and it may rise that high. But it may go a degree or 2 low while it heats up.

Shoot for a avg. Temp of 100 and you'll be just fine.

It know it fluctuates some. I had seen the temp was low and turned the screw a little to heat it up. It was actually fine and just the reading on that thermometer so I had it turned up all evening until I finally figured out what the deal was.
