A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

If you figure this out let me know. Ed gurgles, but it is a throaty gurgle and I thought it was just him wanting to make noise and not cluck like a hen or crow.
One of my roosters does that kind of gurgle, and I think it's normal... These birds sound different, don't even know how to 'splain it. And of course, they won't do it on video.

My Orpington roo does this... I treated him for it and he still does it. He is happy and healthy just had a gurgle

You sound so much like the way I do things. I try to remain drug free. and for the most part do, but if I get a bird that seems to have a bacterial infection I will send it to the ICU and start antibiotics or whatever. Or to let die.. I then clean and disinfect as much as I can so a second bird does not become ill.

If it was not for having done my NPIP testing 2 months ago I would have no idea how many birds I have. I could be off by 100 for all I know, I look in a pen and guesstimate.

I will know before long as I am aiming for 40 birds going into next breeding season. I am thinking the last predator attack did more damage than I thought. The pen seems eerily empty.

I seem to be low on my white legbars, I had 30 or more in that pen, I don't see that many anymore.
Counting birds is no easy task unless they are being crated and moved.

Back to small victories... My 1 year old granddaughter at the dismay of her parents totally blew off the highly processed foods they offered her tonight... As in she threw it across the table and then onto the floor. After which, she curled up in my lap and chowed on organic greens, tomatoes, cucumber, and blue berries. I've converted her and love it. BTW, she also will only drink raw milk, when it comes to milk and she prefers the juice I make over store bought juice. I'm a bad grandpa!:wee:old:clap:old:thumbsup

Do I look like I feel guilty????:caf

I had been meaning to ask you about gapeworm. What were the symptoms of it? I was wondering if your birds had different symptoms from the normal... Thought I recalled some birds just seeming a bit under the weather and then perking up when dosed.

I have a batch of chicks with hoarse peeps and slight gurgling. Never seen anything like it. I looked it up gapeworm symptoms but the gasping for breath part didn't line up... The birds look fine, act fine, they just sound bad.

When I discovered we had gapeworm it was after a very brutal, hot summer... I didn't have classic 'gapeworm signs' so it wasn't even on my radar... started with a couple birds within one week, laid their egg and walked out of the coop and just fell over dead... suspected heat stroke so I added electolytes/vitamin supplements to their water through the heat... this seemed to fix things... then I lost a couple ducks, but with them it looked like they were coughing then choking on something and couldn't get air... then it cooled off... the ducks had been more sedentary throughout the heat which I could understand, but they continued once it cooled down... this was concerning... then within the same day, Peg (my special needs duck) almost choked to death in my arms, the only relief she got was floating in water while being supervised... and I found a bantam hen with her head purple and dragging it on the ground... isolated her and just as an afterthought, decided to deworm her... gave her 1 dose and 1 dose to Peg...

This is the hen when I brought her in for 1st dose...

This is her 24hrs later, before 2nd dose... HUGE improvement... but the ducks are what show my first signs of needing to deworm... sitting around, quieter, less active, less bathing/preening are warning signs... if any ducks start 'coughing', immediate dosing happens... I think this is due to earthworms, snails and slugs being the intermediate host for gapeworms and my ducks eat more of those than my chickens do... either way, to me with chickens they go purple and hang around listlessly and the ducks cough... no rattle/wet hreathing sounds... that sounds more respiratory, could be fungal?

Yep, sounds like me... I know most of mine by sight too, and can tell if someone is missing, but not an exact count in most pens, lol...

Or being dewormed... :th

Or they are lying dead from a device designed as an obstruction to the flow in stream or river predator.

Awful way to get a count though... :(
