A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I'm terrified of anything that resembles a spider. My turkeys are eating SOMETHING in the grass. I haven't found a tick yet on my birds,And I do look. You'd think the naked turkey neck would be prime territory
Spiders we have, but I can usually see those buggers. I don't like them and they don't like me. If one bites me, I typically get a reaction and it doesn't matter what kind it is. Once in Florida, we could see all this "glitter" in the yard. Then when hubby went out to check, it turned out to be spiders EVERYWHERE!! Needless to say, I wasn't enthused.

The problem with the ticks is that all my grandkids have been playing in my yard for years, but at the same time, I have had ducks and chickens since forever (and I mow grass constantly) - and no one ever found a tick on them. Yet suddenly a lot of people in this area are getting Lyme disease this summer. Maybe partly because we didn't have much a a winter this time. Then I just found out this evening that you can get Lyme multiple times. Geesh

I guess all I can do is keep checking the birds, too. I agree - you would think the ticks would be thinking "turkey buffet" with those bald heads. :D

Thank you for your words about Aidan and his getting better soon. Right now he's having a hard time with nausea and fatigue. I certainly feel for the little guy.

She said her chickens were 3 months old, so what, about 12 weeks? No grown ones to worry about I guess.

Oops, I shouldn't just assume Finnisher is a she. Better go check profile...
Male, lol. I'll get around to updating my profile... eventually.

If you have a wire partition between them for a while at first so they can get used to each other without mingling, then I wouldn't think it would be dangerous for your turkeys at all. After they are used to each other's presence, you can open the divider up so they can mingle and meet, and see how it goes. Expect some pecking order to be established, but usually if they have met through the wire for a while, they accept each other pretty well when it's time to meet face to face.

Thanks, there will be wire separating them.

I have something to say... As far as I'm concerned since Ralph STARTED this thread HIM AND ONLY HIM should be the one who approves are disapproves of posts. We are not school children who need someone telling us what we need to think or say.. The TOPIC goes in whatever direction Ralph chooses to take it. I've heard a couple of long time BYC members recently talk of leaving the site for this reason. I'm on the verge of going them. For me this site is MORE than simply information. Its a place where I share my day with friends who have similar thoughts and ideas. I've dealt with posts I didn't agree with by simply ignoring them. Its not personal everyone has an opinion. The heavy handed moderator seems to think differently, erasing posts THEY don't like. A lot of politicians THINK they know what's best for us too. I have absolutely no use for either of you. So erase this OPINION and validate my argument. Sorry to get off topic Ralph. I'm sure the mudraider will take care of it

You guys have been busy on here! Just finished my read back.

I wasn't questioning the temp accuracy, just saying I had much better hatches a touch higher temp... and never done cool downs... ran humidity at 30% for entire incubation and hatch...

X2. I run my bators around 100-100.5 and 30%-ish humidity until lockdown, then bump it up to 65%. Turkeys routinely hatch 1 day early and chickens right on time.

You're right! I hadn't thought of it before--but all of my hens can fan horizontal or vertical, my toms vertical only. Hummm...:oops::oops:

I've noticed that my young toms (12-16 weeks) fanned horizontal when alarmed.

Has anyone had a big problem with ticks this year? I know my ducks and turkeys will eat them and according to some "experts", they can eat up to 200 a day. I also read that there is a turkey tick which is actually the larvae of the Lone Star Tick - which I don't even know if we have around here. We do have the dog tick and the deer ticks that carry Lyme disease.

I have not seen any ticks on any of my birds, but can they attach and cause problems? Or would they just get "eaten" as they are discovered by the birds themselves?

My 9 year old grandson was just diagnosed with Lyme disease, spent a day at the hospital and now has to take antibiotics for the next 21 days.

Everyone around here Keuka freaking out about the ticks and how many there are and everything. Heck, or girl scout troop leader drove me absolutely nuts about it over our camping trip weekend. I personally have not seen a tick ANYWHERE. I know that the birds are keeping our yard and woods clear of them but I haven't seen any anywhere else either

I just looked at Porter's site for the first time. I never knew their were so many color varieties. I like a comment he made about not forgetting their purpose as meat birds

Right now, their experimental breedings are still on sale for $5/poult and last I looked, included free priority shipping lol. You should go for it!
