A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

One word of above on the quail...NEVER, try to keep them with any kind of chickens! Even the tiniest of bantam seramas! I made a fatal mistake with mine the other day :/ I had a boy and 2 girls, perfect trio from my 3 eggs that hatched. They were getting very big in the brooder so I thought that I would move them out to the temporary, winter home with the seramas since they were about the same size. I checked then every half hour, ask day long to make sure all was good and everything seemed fine. Over night, my seramas decided to attack my quail. The one girl was dead already when I found them in the morning. The other girl and the boot were both scalped badly and the boy couldn't open his eyes. I lost that other girl that evening. The little boy is still with us and is recovering. He still can't open his eyes but he's energetic and happy. He's back in the brooder with the new years hatch a long babies. He starts calling when he hears my voice and is ready to eat (I'm hand feeding him now). He's such a sweet thing. I feel absolutely terrible about it.

Sorry about your quail. Birds are definitely brutal at times. I’d have them separate from all other poultry in cages since I hear their droppings are quite stinky. Just need to figure out a good cage design (been looking around on here/Internet). Will be a little while before can get them since we have other animals to get first.

I keep My quail in homemade rabbit hitches.
1/2 hardware cloth on the bottom and the 3 sides. The inside box area where the rabbit would sleep is solid bottom and the quail use it in inclement weather.

They are about 3 feet above the ground and my chickens and Turkey's clean up any feed the quail fling out. Keeps the poo smell down as well.

1 male to about 6 females.

6 eggs equal 1 chicken egg

Looks like they worked things out!! He gave her a back massage then all out bred with her. Hadn’t seen him actually accomplish mating before but there was no doubt he did the job this time. Also noticed the roo mating with our older white silkie. She has started laying again. Guess he figured it was ok since his “wife” is busy with her babies.

I thought i read where quail need be far away from chickens... cause chickens carry somethin bad for the quail like blackhead in turkeys.. not the same thing but same principal? We are lookin at the rabbit hutch livin arrangements for quail too. Just havent decided where keep them because of the chicken thing.

I keep em in rabbit hitches with solid roof.

Then the ones I keep inside the shed I use 2x3 ft wire cages that are meant for rabbits.

Chickens are over and under them all the time. Have had no known losses because of the chickens or Turkey's.

But the quail are never exposed to the ground.

Pheasants I had were on the ground where chickens had been. No losses on those either.

We are expecting warmer weather this weekend...finally! My poor birds need a break from these constant below freezing temps. I realize our temps have been nothing compared to most of you. And my birds have been fine. So to be honest...it's ME that needs a break! It's tough for me to spend much time with the girls in 20 or below temps. My double coated Aussies are good to go....my poor short coated coonhound puppy does not appreciate this weather. He's 6 months old now. Growing like a weed. Such a different temperament than I've been used too. Few things that surprised me is how sensitive he is...the other is what a good comunicater he can be. It's a good time to be working with this pup since I can't get outside as much as I'd like. I'm liking this pup. For me it's all about the working partnership developed with my dogs. So far this pup has exceeded my expectations. I wasn't expecting him to be as mentally mature at only 6 months. He's already takiing off lead commands...sit, down, come, stay....etc. He's quite reasonable. On the down side....He's a theif! He picks up trinkets around the house & stashes them in a pile somewhere. I've heard Walkers can do this....and he sure does. He's also learned to use the lever door handles. First dog I've owned that can let himself in or out of a room.
Enough of my hound dog musings. Looking forward to spending some time with the girls this weekend!!!!

I am looking forward for warmer weather too:wee
I had a cat that could open round door knobs and the fridge, but didn't close them :he had to child proof strap on the fridge and keep the outside doors locked.

My poor old, almost 14 year old terrier mix isn't liking this weather either :/ Rocky will get outside to pee, do his thing and will slowly walk back, lifting each foot and moving like it's painful. I feel bad for him but at least I know he won't wander off (he tends to do that anymore)

Lol, that's funny! We had a Siberian husky that was smart like that. She would hide and stash away HER things like a chewy or rawhide or the little stuffed dog that we called her baby. If we found them, she'd immediately go and find a new place to hide them lol. We didn't have any lever door handles for her to open but I know she'd have easily done it. Our bulldog mix learned how to open the fridge when she was a puppy. We had to stop hanging a hand towel from the handle, especially since she had such extreme food allergies.
