A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Once they get their little beaks out in open air, they are very talkative... I'll be setting some BR and RP eggs on Thursday.... I like to follow Ralphie's schedule.

Think this thanksgivin just turned into mothers day... yesterday he flogged our newest goat who is already quite skiddish. Then this mornin i went up to milk a d while i was doin my chores up there he came after me... yep. Dun. Dun. Dun. He will make a nice mothers day dinner for us i do believe! Maybe out of all these lil poults runnin amok we will get one good tom... hopefully.

Make sure tomorrow is the day...otherwise he will be too tough to chew on Mothers day...He needs and deserves 4 days in the fridge to rest.

jjjj
Having a chick or two a week older than the turkeys is a must...Turkeys are like DUX in that respect, not real brain trusts......BUT the turkeys are at least useful and luvable.

I put chicken eggs in with the turkeys. That way when the turkeys hatch the chicks are ready to do babysitting duty.

Turkey egg shells are tough, but the turkeys seem to hatch better with less problems than chickens. I run around 75% humidity the last 3 days..

Also do not candle them until day 14. You will only disappoint yourself if you do. At a week you might see something or might not. Day 11 you normally do. BUT by 14 you know which ones are alive.
I have noticed the poults and ducklings eating before the chicks even get started. Maybe I have smarter turkeys than most, but they seem to be teaching the chicks to eat in my brooders.

R2elk posted a link about the feed being an issue .. a miracle happened when I made sure the toms couldn't get into the chicken feed and only could eat the turkey feed...he quit jumping on me and within a few days he quit pecking and wing slapping me.

I have never (knocking on wood) been speared by a Tom like I have by roosters. The Tom's seem to hit with their chests more than their spurs/legs.

I remember years a few years ago watching JJ and a rooster fight. It was so funny as the rooster would try to spur and JJ tried to fly up and hit the rooster with his chest. Basically they never touched each other. But the fight was fun to watch.

From what I read the cause is too low of salt content.
