A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Note to self, include 1,000,000 Japanese beetles in package....

Here is the new guy on the day he should hatch (or a day early)...look closely at the egg in the foreground and you can see the pip.

He looks to be a slate, but the top of his/her head is very dark. I think there are 6 other pipped eggs....BUT true to this years hatching luck, the automatic water filler plugged up and the humidity was down to 36%.

I opened the hatcher, a huge NO NO.....added a wet sponge and changed the float. I will have to watch to make sure they progress. I am afraid of shrink wrapping at those low humidities.

It has the mask associated with the black gene which is what slates have. I would guess you have some kind of mutt that has one slate gene (D).

Not mutt!!! Calico mixture!

I am finding the mutts are more fun for me. I will have "pure" slates and RP's.
I think this one has a little more black in it also (or a little less slate) based on the dark head...

Maybe it is a Mexico Black,,,,, Or Cuban Dark Brown....:gig:gig:gig:lau:lau:lau:lau

Calico requires red (r) and Narragansett (n).

It is not possible to have more black than a Blue Slate (BB) or less slate (Dd) and have any slate at all. It wouldn't surprise me if it picked up some gray (cg) and even some Narragansett (n) from a Royal Palm or from your mixed variety Narragansett hen.
