Turkey Poult Pics!

This is the last one that hatched out of the 4. She/he was still under the heating plate on the other pictures.

Ok, so duct tape is out. Darn! Thanks, @R2elk (and Ralphie!)

I think I will have help within the next day or so to wrestle with him. Tommie is not mean or aggressive - just very bulky.

I did not do anything today because of these other ongoing "dog ate her flea collar" problems (and more). But I think we are now past the worst as of this evening - since all the plumbing is working again.

I also lost a poult night before last - no feathers, no nothing. One of the 3-month-olds. Was inside the shed on a roost with its momma and sibling - was gone yesterday morning. So I put Momma outside in the big run with the remaining poult and where she has a number of places to roost. This morning, the last poult was gone.

After this past week, all I can do is shake my head. Frustrated, angry and sad all at the same time

@memphis - I didn't mean to not answer you the other day about the dog.

I'll never buy another flea collar - not with this dog. She was a stray in Baltimore that someone found/rescued from a druggie. My sister (another one with 6 more to choose from) ended up fostering since the dog place is overflowing. She posted posters with area found and description. Some lady showed up, said it was her dog, had pictures that matched down to the two front crooked teeth, medical records for shots and spay, said it had been stolen, took it home. Two hours later, the lady brought the dog back and said it wasn't her dog.

Personally, I don't think the dog was stolen - I think they dumped it because she ate everything that wasn't nailed down. Brought the dog back with the excuse it wasn't her dog. I guess it gave her a free pass to tell the neighbors it wasn't her pet and a way to still get rid of her.

She is a Bischon Frise (according to the vet), about 20-25 lbs, and so far since I have had her here, she has eaten a complete dog bed, a dozen toys, a blanket, two towels, and her peepads.

Anyway, apparently, some flea collars can be extremely poisonous if ingested. She had tremors, seizures, and was uncoordinated and barely able to walk. Hence, the trip to the emergency clinic.

She had already been reduced to sleeping in a crate at night with no bed, no blanket, no toys, etc. So, I guess she was bored and ate the collar.

Have you had her DNA analyses to see if she is part goat?

Morning Grammy!

Trim....yes you need turkeys! They are a hoot! So much personality!

Flashpoint....did the dog actually ingest the collar? Did they have to remove it...or let nature take its course? Nothing more frustrating than living with a chewer. Is this a young dog?

R2elk....it always amazes me that people arbitrarily get a pet because it's cute or the "in" thing. Then things fall apart. I'm not getting on my soap box. We've all seen it. I agree, no jail too big...

Still enjoying our cold snap! Daisy amused the neighbors by flying around the front yard! She was being silly! I love watching her flying! It's so funny to see this big ole blue butterball airborne! Neighbors were clapping and yelling Olympic scores at her...9.7!! She'd score a 10, but she doesn't get much height! Between grazing, visiting with neighbors and flying, she was one tuckered turkey last night.

Daisy is so funny!

Everyone was enjoying the cool here yesterday too. I let Eve, Pebbles, and Cynthia out to graze but Duchess, and 4 more of the penciled all escaped to join them. As long as they behave themselves and start in the yard, I won't force them back in lol. I haven't seen any of them really flying but they jump around, flapping their wings, twirling and dancing lol

@duluthralphie I swear she must be part goat. Or trash disposal. Obviously, she's first cousins to a trash compactor!

Dog people tell me she does it for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: partly out of fear of not getting enough food (was skin and bones), bored, puppy behavior (guesstimate of around 2 years old), or (insert any other descriptive)?

I hear so much about how dogs have mental issues just like humans. Well, be that as it may - I just know that I am not sure that either she nor me may survive this.

All I wanted was a nice, happy go lucky dog that would bark when strangers came around. :rant

@memphis I guess due to the high temps lately, my yard had an influx of fleas, boarded the train (Roxxie), and so I bought a flea collar. As the photo shows, she has (had) rather long hair that had been extremely tangled and matted - and several baths had not fixed it. With the combination of the heat and the fleas, my daughter and I sheared that mess off, thinking it would allow the hair to grow back to its more natural state and allow me access to combat the fleas.

I do not know if she actually ate the collar itself (missing) or the other half of it (10 inches) that I had cut off due to the length (also missing). When the symptoms started, it included several rounds of vomiting. The last round included parts of flea collar material that measured approx 10 inches. (Yup, I washed vomit and saved the pieces. It was "Puzzle time".)

After her haircut (and a shave), I decided to give another bath to get rid of visible fleas. I took the collar off - but....can't remember if it was inside or outside of the house - and pitched it up on something (table? porch? arggggg). Needless to say, but one or the other was indeed ingested.

Unfortunately, I just didn't think.:old:old:old

Vet gave her SQ fluids and a Cerenia injection for nausea. Prescribed antibiotics and Benadryl and handed me 3 flea pills. I won't even go into the "You have to call Poison Control before we can see your dog" saga. What a rip! I had already called 5 vets, another clinic and 2 poison control places. My vet was unavailable (Saturday).

Guineas will do that for you.

When I lived in PA, our dogs always had fleas and the fleas had to be dealt with. In WY, I have never had fleas on any of my dogs. There are fleas here. All of the wild animals have them and they can carry the plague but I just never had fleas on any of my dogs.

I couldn't agree more! :D
I always thought that turkeys where aggressive until I met a Tom named Tom. I went to pick up come chickens, and he was the owners pet and 5 years old. Tom was an awesome fella. He followed me around the entire time and when I squatted down to talk with him, he straitened me. It completely changed my opinion of turkeys. Not to mention just how beautiful he was.

I'm debating if I want to wait till next spring, or try to get a couple of day old's to go with the chicken hatching I've got going on now.

Not that anyone here needs a refresher... But some people have addictions, and the rest of us have real problems.
